    Our first 'tilling'!

Steve, that's so inspiring! It's how we've gotten this far too.. our property is very small so we don't exactly, or should I say didn't, have access to a lot of materials, leaves, etc.. the chickens were strategically purchased during the time we were figuring out what we would need to get...

Yes, horses across the street, and occasionally I am lucky enough to get a large planter full but not often enough. She gardens too ;) I've never tried growing lavender, I Do like it... maybe I'll try next year... I don't have much in the way of herbs, just a basic italian mix and some Russian...

    Our first 'tilling'!

yes, it's what we use in our chicken coops for bedding, so inevitably the gardens get a nice amount of sand... construction sand though, course with lots of little pebbles. When we shovel out a coop we just spread it all evenly in one of the available gardens. The compost piles dont' have a...

    Our first 'tilling'!

We need a soil breaking MONSTER to really work it over here... something that would cost near $1000 really... and because of where I live, the only things you really find for sale used.. are either ancient or broken & need repair. So if we rent one a couple times.. maximum $125 spent over 2...

    Our first 'tilling'!

Thanks punkinpeep... after we get it all tilled in, whever that does happen, THEN I'm going to send off for a soil test. I didn't figure it was worth it before.. sending in a small chunk of clay is hardly worth a "soil" test. I was hoping it would at least resemble soil or dirt before I...

    Our first 'tilling'!

    Canning Questions

Yes, for pressure canning. Thanks Pat! I'm actually trying to can some of the cuban dinners I make... one is most like a beef stew with tomato sauce as a base and either chicken or beef as the protein. The other is my Black Beans recipe... for which I am guessing a basic bean soup recipe is...

    Canning Questions

I'm trying to find a recipe close to the ones that I usually use at home... I found a beef stew recipe... Can someone tell me if tomato sauce, water & broth are interchangeable in a meat recipe??? and could I use chicken instead of beef or by the same token, ham or pork interchangeably?

    Where did I go wrong?

Thank you two.. I didn't use the stick but I did check for air bubbles and didn't see any.. so possibly that.. could've been too little headspace too.. I don't think too much was a problem flux in pressure... sure I suppose so.. followed the instructions but have a weighted regulator.. I did...

    Where did I go wrong?

So I canned a bunch of my sweet potatoes, BUT when I was done I noticed that the water was really orange and that half the jars were only half full of syrup. Are they still ok? And is this normal? Does anyone know what I did wrong? I'm leaning toward not leaving enough headspace... it was...

    10 Gallons of Sweet Potatoes!!!

The potatoes I had grew from the roots of the main plant AND from the roots of the runners.. they would spread like a vine & the vine would take root here and there like strawberry runners or a spider plant. The BIG potatoes came from the main plant.. smaller ones from the runners. I too had...

    10 Gallons of Sweet Potatoes!!!

Thanks Miron & 4grandbabies :D Ridgerunner, I'll google "mattock" to see what it is. Thanks for the tips on using the cut ones.. I was figuring the chickens might like them too since I'll have to use them up quickly. Sweet potato bread sounds SOOO yummy. Any idea how long they need to cure...
