    Completely new to gardening, advice?

My advice for you is to just have fun with it. It doesn't have to be perfect and I always enjoy "experimenting" with different ways of doing things. With a lot of things in the garden there is no right or wrong way to do stuff - you just have to find what works well for you. Good luck!! and have...

    Green & Yellow Onions

Here in our area, onions start to bulb around June/July. Might be a little bit earlier in your area. We were talking about onions a week or two ago so you might want to look for that thread. If I remember right, it was titled " Onion question" and it shouldn't be much past page 2 or 3 in the...

How is your garden doing so far?

Thank you Big Red Hen! I planted those last September and let them overwinter. We've been eating them the last couple of weeks (yum) just to thin them out a little so we'll have big ones later this summer. Big Red Hen and all the rest of you guys post some updates and let us know how your...

    Bugger. Peach tree grafting question.

So sorry your dealing with the mess. I wish I could remember more of what my great grandpa did with his fruit trees - he really had the grafting stuff down to a science. You could try maybe 1 graft now just to see what happens. I will say this: even if you do everything right sometimes you loose...

    Bugger. Peach tree grafting question.

I think I would plant it where you were going to plant after you grafted and let them grow this year. If you don't mind rolling around on the ground you can graft onto them where they sit next spring. Probably not the best way to do it but it would save you time and money plus a lot of digging...

    Tomatoes Tomatoes, how many colors?

I'm in Virginia - really long growing season for the zone we're supposed to be in. I had a volunteer tomatoe last year that grew to almost eight feet.:hu

    Tomatoes Tomatoes, how many colors?

I don't know how hattie does it , but I've grown lots of tomatoes by pulling "suckers" and then sticking them in the ground. I always put a bucket with a few holes in the bottom beside the "suckers" for about a week and keep it full of water to keep it from drying out until they have started a...

    Bentonite clay soil?

We have clay here too and it has been a challenge. The big thing is to keep adding anything organic - grass clippings, leaves, manure etc. . I also try to keep it tilled as much as possible to keep it from getting a "crust" on top especially after rain or watering. The sand is probably a bad...

How is your garden doing so far?

I really need to get some more pictures to post. The last couple of weeks have been rainy then sunny every 2 or 3 days , so the garden is loving it. You guys in the colder zones don't lose heart - spring is on its way!

    Something is eating my beans!

I've used Sevin spray before with good results. You really have to be careful with it though. It is Illegal to spray it on beans that are blooming , but ok to use before they bloom. I also try to spray when it is dry because it is toxic to earthworms. I wait about 2 or 3 days after I spray with...

What I've been putting on my baby plants

We have a pond on the property here and about a month ago a friend was out here fishing and left me with about 2 1/2 dozen minnows. I wasn't planning to fish any for a while , so the minnows went into a plastic barrel that holds about 20 gallons. So I've been taking water out of the barrel to...

How is your garden doing so far?

Hey guys! Just checking in. We've had some nice weather the past couple of days , so I've been busy outside. Got some netting up for my peas , put the last couple of rows of radishes in and FINALLY got my tomatoes outside for some real sun! Hope everyone is well and your gardens are doing good...

    Chickpeas?

I just looked it up on wiki , and it says they are tropical or subtropical but they will grow in temperate areas with a reduced yield. I guess probably either plant them like regular beans or peas, or maybe try to sprout them inside first. Something I've never really eaten much of or tried to...

    Apple tree blooming

:lol:Hey pretty much! It seems like it blooms earlier every year. And I'm beginning to think it's taunting me.

    Apple tree blooming

Yeah that tree is really old though. It is actually on some type of dwarfing root stock, but it's not really a dwarf anymore. It was here when we bought the place and had been sorely neglected. Now that it's in better shape it gets frosted on as soon as the blooms open up. Oh yeah thanks for the...

    Transplanting wild strawberries...

Never tried it, but if your just doing it as a ornamental I think it would work. If you want strawberries to eat , the wild ones just don't make a very big berry. Might be worth a try either way:hu
