Thanks for the insight. I guess you hit it on the head pat when you said it is a lot of trial and error.
Vfem to answer your question as for as what I am growing - note the screen name :D Not fluffy flowers here.
START! START QUICK! - indoors. :lau
My tomatoes broke ground yesterday!! Now if I can just keep them alive I will be in good shape!
Not sure I am anywhere near putting anything outside yet, but I can't wait!
Me too vfem. I probably use half give away a quarter and feed the other to the chickens. I think that there will be a lot of gardeners with this economy.
OK
For all you seed starters I have a few questions. I have made an indoor greenhouse in my garage. I have loaded my seed start trays with potting soil and a seed. Placed them on the shelf turned on the lights and turned on the heater.
Now for the questions.
Lights always on?
How hot does...
That is where you are wrong. I am not wasting seeds, everything that I start ends up in the dirt just might not be my dirt as long as it grows that is. ;)
I am not planning on using dirt. You can get the same results from using hay/straw with a lot less weight. You just have to do a little feeding.
A 2 wheel dolly does wonders too!
:smack you are right that was mean!
I will put probably 25 in the ground and give away the rest just like the peppers.
You just cant buy a whole pack of seeds and not use the whole pack can you? Is that even legal!?! :D
I tired this with peppers but didnt have any luck. The melons and squash types worked just fine. Tomatoes grew plants but never really any useful fruits. Cukes came out ok but nothing to right home about - has better luck saving seeds from my own plants. Potatoes worked ok as well but the...
I think I might try this and just leave them in my "hot room" in the garage. If I build a frame to pack with straw and seed potatoes and then put a bottom on it to make it movable do you think that will still grow anything?
I am getting spring fever something horrible. I look at the snow and ice covered muddy garden and it drags me it got the better of me. I got out my seed trays and grow light and planted a started a couple seeds. I put out 70 tomatoes, 70 bell peppers, and 70 serrano peppers. I figure this...
Freaked me out. I left and came back 3 times. I didnt think the link was sending me to the right spot. Finally got brave and clicked forum and things started looking a little more familiar.
Geez Man warn a guy will ya!:th
Does look nice though :D
We use a cattle feeder. It is filled with straw and hay only. Never has a drop of dirt in it and when harvest is here you can almost pick up the plant and all the potatoes come with it.
add about 12 inches and hay or straw place seed potatoes and cover with another 12 inches.
Once they start...
JMO but I would keep them seperate. They could cross and that couldnt have a good outcome. If you are growing them for anything more that the fun of it I would play better safe than sorry.
I got a 4 foot whole light at Wally World yesterday that has a "grow light" in it for $10. It has hooks to hang it with and a cord ready to plug in so there was no wiring. Most plan shop lights I saw were $7 and you had to fit a plug on them.
I have 2 tillers - 1 is 72 inches wide and runs on the tractor and one is 14 inches and is self propelled. I love them both and wouldnt garden without them. i think working during the growing period helps water soaking in as well as controlling the weeds and promoting a little root growth /...
I am looking at local pecans and english walnuts. I found producing trees within 20 miles of me so I am hoping this shows they will produce in the soil type / area. What are your thoughts as far as the soil type for the pots and moisture amounts?
SimpleLife
I will have to look and see what kind I grow. It does very well though and we have been very happy with it. I have a couple wild patches that I pick from too that I have often thought of moving. But they grow just fine where they are so why mess with it, right?!
