    Egg plant recommendations?

Last year on a whim we tried "Ichiban" an Asian type, long and slender. They were absolutely delicious brushed with oil and grilled, and the plants were really stunning too with bluish green leaves and purple stems. Prolific as well. We found them as plants at our local nursery, but we loved...

what do you wish, in your wildest dreams, you could grow?

Figs! I adore them. I could do it in our climate, but it's more mork than than I want to deal with right now and we don't have the space. Someday maybe. Phyllis

    Moving to DC

Congrats as well! I have to say though that Northern Virgnia is one of the most congested parts of the US. We have family down there I lived there as a kid, and the sprawl and traffic jams are just incredible. In some ways it's worse than MA because SO many people commute every day to govt...

    most unusual produce

It does - it bolts really fast. But Y'know I just looked at that handy dandy link you provided for planting times, and in NC (zone 7 right?) it recommends transplanting broccoli Feb 15, and I'm positive Sessantina would do just fine for you transplanted at that date. Also - Sessantina does...

    most unusual produce

I can't argue with that! They do, buy the florets are not really in a head like broccoli and they are smaller and not clustered together. The leaves are just as tasty as the florets and the leaves are larger and much more conspicuous than leaves of regular brocccoli. The stems are more tender...

    Anyone with Lavender Experience

So here's a thought - now mind you I've never done this - but I wonder if it makes sense to start levender seeds, and then transplant them to a nursery bed for a season before you put them in their permanent location. My experience with perenials is that they can be kind of fragile until they...

    most unusual produce

I saw that listing for Agretti, and I agree it looks pretty cool. The Japanese have a plant that seems like it, it grows in brackish water so it has a interesting salty taste. I wonder if Agretti is similiar. We grow Johnny's Sessantina Brccoli Raab and love it; it's easy to start from seed...

Raised Garden Project - just started!

Well for me they just look neater make it easier to plant and weed. Also, in our cold climate, raised beds heat up faster and I can plant earlier in the year. The beds we made are way higher than necessary; the ones that Beavis is building are more the norm. Phyllis

Raised Garden Project - just started!

Well not that Im trying to enable you or anything ;) but this project was easily one of the most gratifying of the various home improvement projects we've done over the years. My husband built the beds from Trex (the composite deck material) and we had our landscaper install the pavers. A...

    Seed Heat Mat

I use seedling heat mats; I love 'em and I bet the Ebay seller you looked at is the same guy I bought mine from - he's great! Those mats need to sit on thin plastic because they don't get that warm, they will raise the ambient air temp only 10- 20 degrees F. You can still use TP rolls just...
