Where do you buy your seeds?

This has been my experience as well, and although I must admit started plants I've bought at my local Home Depot have been very disappointing; I've had much better experience with Lowes started plants and they have more interesting varieties. As for seeds, Im pretty partial to Johnny's because...

What is the value of tree

No, you shouldnt give up your dream, but yes you do need to know what's in the ground and were it is. Anytime you need to dig into a yard for a big project it requires some prework to identify where your utilities might be located. This is an extremely important safety step that you really...

What is the value of tree

Same thing with us - in the past 10 years we've taken down over twenty "trash trees" because they were either dangerous, ugly or both. Rampant unchecked tree growth is not nessarily a good thing. Here is Mass. we had a terrible ice storm last month, and a friend of mine spent $4,200 to take...

Do you buy plants or start from seed? Where do you buy?

I do a lot of seed starting because I really enjoy the process (it's just what I need after a long winter!) and I can grow things such as Broccoli de Raab that I'd never find as started plants. The big guys like Johnny's and Seeds of Change have kept me pretty happy. I think a lots of...

    Genetically modified tomato seeds?

I have not heard of GMO seeds being sold for the home gardening market, only for agri-business production. As for the whole Frankenfoods issue, a few weeks ago I heard the CEO of Monsanto interviewed on NPR, and he made a solid case for GMO from his perspective. Basically, he said that water...

    When to plant garlic

Yup - usually right before your first frost date. Here in MA (zone 6) that's around the end of October. Ours did some sprouting during a Janaury thaw last year, but they still turned out just fine. ~Phyllis

Well, I have this wonderful hat and depending on the weather I wear either a pair of Birkenstock gardening clogs with removeable cork insoles (15+ years old, much abused and still going strong) or Wellie knock-off boots from Costco. One thing I might do next summer is make mystelf a nice...

Mass- Does anyone know anyone who designs and plans vegatable gardens?

When we did our renovation we hired a landscape architect, and it was money well spent. We used him mostly for the front yard and driveway, but he did give us a preliminary plan for our veggie garden, which we did change but his first pass was still helpful. His name is Mike Immel . Our house...

    the disgusting tomato....catepillar?

I found the very same! The parasite eggs were white and about the size of rice grains. The hornworm had dozens on it, or what was left of it; basically it was just a shriveled up husk. My daughters had a good time checking it out under a microscope. ~Phyllis
