The banana peels are a great idea too. Thats one of the things my snooty chickens wont eat.
I'm going to try the egg shell seed pot idea too. If nothing else it will be cute :)
I had the same problem with Gurney's this spring - I ordered grapevines and potatoes and strawberries. Half the strawberries were dead, the potatoes were rotting, and the grapevine was the wrong kind (and dry and dying)
They did ship all new things to me, and told me about their warranty...
Well- thats what I thought when I was looking at my cabbage and spinach plants yesterday- they all seem to be growing bud clusters... I guess that 90 degree heat wave wasn't so good for them. My cabbage never formed heads, it just kept growing taller and taller and now has broccoli like buds on...
I love those chicks!! That frame is really nice too.
If you guys were going to plant corn, pole beans and pumpkin/squash in a raised bed, 3 sisters style, how would you space everything? My bed is 4x8, and I have another right next to it I'm considering using in addition. I did it in one block...
I read somewhere that the summer solstice is what makes the bulbs start to really develop, so probably around the end of June they'll start getting really big.
But thats just what I read :hu
Oops. So a couple days ago I finally got my heirloom tomato seeds in the mail. Its really late to start them here, so I decided to try to get them to sprout as soon as possible, I put them in peat pots with seed starter mix, then put the peat pots in a take-n-toss tupperware with a lid on it and...
Hey! I sent you a PM Beekissed, I'm in Martinsburg WV. Where in the panhandle do you live?
I have an acre and a half on a mixed use road... We bought our house from my husbands grandmother when his grandfather passed away. His grandfather was retired and spent almost ALL his time gardening, so...
I found this website which has a really good tool for finding when to plant everything where you live- it breaks it down by week, and lists what veggies go in then. Thats the hardest part for me, knowing when to plant
I'm growing nothing weird this year, but next year I want to grow pretty much everything from the Bakers Creek catalog- lol!
But really, so far my list is:
tomatillos- not that weird, but I am in WV
jelly melon or horned cucumber- it has spiny horns and the pulp inside resembles...
I just got done saying in another post that we bought this house from my husband's grandparents who did SFG. I kept their book and continued gardening the (lax) SFG way in the beds. I dont do the Mel's mix or anything, but I think the plant spacings and trellising are genius
** I have to say-...
Great Pictures everyone. Beekissed- I'm loving your trellis.
We bought our house from my husbands grandparents, and they had a square foot raised bed garden already in place that I just took over. I really like it, but since the boards are rotting and I think the beds are spaced too far apart...
I'm in zone 6b, mine is about the same as everyone else's.
Strawberries, broccoli, snap peas, chard, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, radishes, scallions are in now and growing.
Tomato and Pepper starts are in my greenhouse, I think if it stays warm like it is supposed to all...
ironimagery- maybe it was Aunt Ruby's German Green? That is a big green beefsteak tomato- really delicious.
I wanted a rainbow of tomatoes this year too. I tried to get all different sizes too.
I bought a packet of rainbow cherry mix from Heirloom seeds. They didn't say what is inside, but...
I agree, I bet he'll change his mind. Last year was my first year with a real garden, and my hubby moaned and complained the whole season about the start up costs and the "stuff" lying around. This year he is excited about it and alot more supportive.
He did the same thing with chickens- now...
I've heard some people like to put chicken poop in the holes with their veggies when transplanting, and for using as a fertilizer. I just bought some of that Miracle Gro organic stuff- its mostly pelleted chicken manure. I've got plenty of poo, I could have saved my money!
But my question is...
Sorry I made you hurt yourself wifezilla ;)
You're right- they just gave me the option to cancel my order, so I was considering it. One of the varieties I got was burpee's long keeper- that one should actually be perfect, it should be full of fruits to ripen through the fall/winter in storage.
