    How's everyone's potatoes going?

Potatoes are growing fine but it's been so dang windy this spring that I can't keep straw on them. Just keeps blowing away. I guess it's a good way to get rid of some old bedding though ;)

    Help with transplanted strawberries

A week or so ago I transplanted 80, 1 year old strawberry plants from my parents bed. My dad said I need to clip the blossoms for the first year. I understand that. But these are already a year old, just transplanted. Do I need to do something or just let them go? What are the future...

    Government Violence against small farm

Something sounds weird. Cops just don't detain kids in a room for 6 hours without a reason. I have a feeling that they may have been doing something that the cops, community, surrounding area, etc. didn't like. They may have just been a quiet, peaceful family too. But something just isn't...

    Urine as a liquid fertilizer....

I "free range" my dog too. Maybe it has more to do with the diet then???

    Urine as a liquid fertilizer....

Like I said on SS.com, where my female dogs goes the lawn is dead. It does have a greener ring around the burned spot but it doesn't make up for the 8' patch of destruction.

    Potato logic

I'm still confused. Why do you keep covering them? I planted mine a few inches under the soil and then covered them with straw to keep any late frost off of them. If I see any tubers exposed I will cover them, but why mound up the soil so much??

Anyone else garden by moon phases/zodiac?

The Farmers Almanac has a bunch of moon planting info on it's pages http://www.almanac.com/garden/plantingtable/index.php I might have to give this a go. The only thing I ever payed attention to previously was potatoes on Good Friday and when I was clear from hard frosts. Dang. Now I am...

Anyone else garden by moon phases/zodiac?

Sounds interesting. I would have thought that if there is something behind this idea that there would be a gardening calender out there telling everyone when to plant and harvest. I might have to do a net search on this idea during lunch.

    Potato logic

Constantly covering them? The only thing you want to keep covered is the potatoes themselves. If they are exposed to light they turn green in color and are no good. You can add dirt early on to give them more soil to grow tubers in, but if you are adding dirt every week to the plant... I...

    Deep-litter chicken poop ???

Yes but they do it weeks before they plant. And between the spreading and planting they are tilling it into the ground from 8" to 10" depending on the equipment. A half inch layer of poo incorporated with 8" of soil is really not that hot of a application. The bad side... if the rains don't...

    Deep-litter chicken poop ???

The only time I use bedding/manure straight out of the coop is after my harvest. I pile it up a couple inches in all my beds and let it decompose all winter long. In the spring (well, right now actually. Late April/early May) I turn it into the soil and go about my normal (or abnormal)...

    Shrubs are dying

Thanks Pat! You assumed correctly... Home Depot :/ I will try and see what the root ball looks like. What do I have to loose? I can always just modify the hole (larger, more amendments) and buy better ones. The H.D. ones were <$30.00 each so not too big of a lose.

    Shrubs are dying

Last spring we planted 2 Youndstown Juniper evergreens and 1 Emerald Beauty Arborvitae. All 3 are turning brown. Seemed to get worse over the winter, but really never took off the way I would have imagined over the course of last year. Is there a "miracle solution" to try and help them...

is anyone else as frustrated as i am?

Ya. I had alot of stuff started and some even planted at this time last year. There is no sense rushing it though. My ground is workable but the soil temp is so low yet that the seeds would sit and rot. I think last Saturdays snow fall will be the last but next week is highs in the low 50's...

    Potatoes...

The rule of thumb for our area (So. MN) was to plant on Good Friday. Last year, Easter was quite early and the ground was still froze. The ground is thawed now but is wet from the occasional snow showers. Will spring ever get here??? Should a person be looking at specific average ground temps...

What is your quirky way to plant potatoes?

3-4 inches of snow when I woke up on Sunday.... no taters in the ground yet :(

    My seed potatoes are here--HELP.

I don't really have a clear answer for you. I let mother nature do 80% of the work but when the plants looked dry I used a soaker hose for a few hours a week.

My husband asked "What is a trellis?"

This site has a lot of designs http://www.the-landscape-design-site.com/directory/trellis.html Some of the links don't work but you two should get an idea of what to build. Good luck!
