Since my chicken coop shavings & poo (deep litter method) have been in my two enclosed composters, they have hardly decomposed at all. It's been about 5 months.
So today I got some Espoma "Bio-Excelerator" compost activator powder from Agway.
Has anyone else tried a compost activator...
I ordered from Burpee yesterday. Can't wait. And WHY does it all have to come in one fell swoop? The raking, the cleaning up, the tilling, the seed-starting, the fertilizing, the lettuce seed constant watering, etc. etc. It comes all at once, and soon I'm too tired to do anything the...
How many "hot days" does a ripened watermelon require? I'm wondering if a large number of medium warm days (that Silkie might have in her temperate climate) could serve as well as fewer number of "hot days", or days above a certain temp...
I'm in a cool zone 7, and I've grown the small type successfully. Moon & Stars and the little round ones (I forget their name). Maybe that's the key. Grow a small one that doesn't take as long to grow and mature.
I plant them in the raised bed near the edge, and let them trail over the edge...
Reinbeau Ann, I just Googled Smart Cart, and now I'm sorry that I already have a wheelbarrow (the old fashioned kind)! I bet that's perfect for hauling chicken coop shavings too...
Chicken_boy, you are just showing off that you live in warm, cozy Arizona while us northerners are freezing our patooties off.
All kidding aside, I've tried growing lettuce in our winters, but anything below 32 degrees kills them, no matter what you cover them with (agricultural fabric or...
Mothergoat, I found that daylily variety at a garden center in Rhode Island, but I just Googled the name and found this (in case you wanted to mail-order it):

(Or in a few months, I could snail-mail you some of the offshoot tubers I've gotten from my...
Yes, I think they were bought out by a mega-company. They were originally owned by some real earthy, global plant collector types who were incredibly serious about exploration and preserving excellent plants.
I haven't seen a catalog since they were bought...
Fluff, I would love to know how the bulbs turn out. I'm sure lots of people buy bulbs in the fall and then run out of time to plant them outside. It would be great to have them bloom without an outdoor cold period!
Fluff, I think houseplants might be considered part of the "Indoor and Greenhouse Gardening" thread near the bottom on the Index list. Try there. Your cactus sounds gorgeous, and what a legacy!
Jeepers, I didn't know epimediums could be native. I always assumed they were "exotic" somehow. I think these ones came from Heronswood Gardens (mail order) from Washington state.
Thank you for the nice comments about the coop & pullets. Made me smile.
Someone mentioned Bloody Butcher heirloom tomato - I had never heard of it before my neighbor offered me two last year that she had raised from seed.
The only problem was that we were building a chicken coop and run about five feet from our gardens. I felt so bad about planting a tomato...
