Bluebird, are you the gourd person? I don't grow gourds, but I have three "sugar pumpkins" leftoever from my harvest, and I don't know whether they're still worth cooking with. They were harvested two months ago. BTW, the reason I still have them is because MY girls turn up their little...

    Took me long enough

Hey you guys, put your zone number in your Profile so we know whether to be jealous of you or not (southern gardneners have such a gorgeously long growing season it makes me crazy). I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what state Perdue is in.

What kind of tree is this?

"Horse Apples" - I didn't know that was a tree. I thought it was what horses leave behind... (honestly).

    Where do I start?

I have two black plastic composters that I got from our local cooperative extension service. I've put my coop shavings & chicken poo and mixed it up every other week since June, but to be honest, the shavings are not being very cooperative about decomposing! The poo probably decomposed...

Love this site !!!have an idea...

If there's a section for Pests, we'd have to include garden-rampaging chickens. The poster pest would be Wyandotte, the Watermelon Slayer.

sgtsheart, is that where the pop band "Bare Naked Ladies" got its name? What's the latin name of that plant? Sounds cool, even if it's a weed.

Gritsar! Glad you're here too! For this forum, I didn't think my real name (Buff Hooligans) would make sense to anyone who didn't know our other addiction! Not that "Shallots" makes any sense either, since garlic is actually my favorite crop. But who wants to be remembered as Garlic! I...

I think southern gardeners should be banned because they make us northern gardeners so darn jealous!

    Amaryllis bulbs

Man, you southern gardeners just make us warmth-deprived northern gardeners sick. Sure, just keep posting about all the crops you harvested yesterday. We'll just sit up here freezing to death while you stir-fry your fesh beans.

Well, I tried to take your suggestion about making that photo my avatar, but am failing miserably. The system just doesn't seem to upload the new photo. I'll keep trying. Thank you for the suggestion.

This is from an accidental seeding of Forget-me-nots into my Epimedium 'Rubrum' bed. But I really love it! Especially since the forget-me-not foliage is small and dies off so quickly. The Epimedium hides it. Who else has unintentional pairings that have turned out well?

How long have you been gardening

That's a great story Pat. Funny how having a seed of knowledge, even if it's learned against your will, can sprout into something new and great when given the right conditions.

    Amaryllis bulbs

I agree with everything Patandchickens said. I planted an amaryllus in the garden once when I didn't know what else to do with it. It produced great happy leaves. But I don't remember what happened after I potted it back up in the fall and forced it into dormancy...

How long have you been gardening

My mom made me help her with the shade perennials all over the property. I hated it, but learned some stuff. And my grandma was a rose gardener. It wasn't until I had my own property to garden on that I took a real interest. Then I took a certification course which was the equivalent of a...

Reinbeau, I know I wasn't faithful about putting saltmarsh hay around the bases after the ground froze. Could that have been it? I know, they should do fine here.

    Compost Tea ?

Wow, I always thought it was just manure soaked in water. I'm learning a LOT! MeanQueenNadine is more than just chickens!

    How to propagate a QUINCE?

Here's all I know about propagating woody plants: do it in Spring, and take only from the newest, freshest growth. The newest growth is bursting with cells that are programmed to grow, grow, grow. Use vermiculite or similar, and keep it moist, but not soggy. Use rooting powder, make a little...
