I've noticed this happen in heat, but perhaps it was the heat causing the dryness that did it. That really stinks--it's a bummer to lose your favorite crop! Maybe the side shoots (if cooler and well watered?) will be a nice substitute?
If you cut off the cabbage as usual, and then cut a large X across the remaining stump, 1 mini cabbage will grow from each quadrant. I tried this last year and it worked :) The mini cabbages are small enough to easily fit in your palm, but they're still nice! Of course, if you don't have much...
What a bummer! I'm in the middle of scape season and trying to figure out what to do with 850 since I don't have time to get to market!
I always plant in fall. I planted in spring once and ended up with what I call green garlic--which I love also. It is clumps of small garlic bulbs with lots of...
Yes--I think it's actually called "grabbing" :) I do it, too. As long as you don't uproot anything, you can feel around under the dirt for the large potatoes and leave the tiny ones to continue forming. Isn't this fun?
Different varieties of basil are dramatically different in taste. If you're using a basic sweet or Italian basil, I can't think of why it would taste like licorice. Are you using a standard recipe with olive oil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt and basil?
Bush beans will work fine. Last year I had a row in my corn patch that didn't come up and stuck in a row of bush beans. Even in the shade, they thrived.
This year, I have popcorn planted in my pole bean row to give the beans something to climb on :)
Wow! Are you talking about popcorn you planted this year?!? I'm still having a hard time getting used to other people's growing seasons :)
In WI, we plant in May, harvest in Sept/Oct and let it dry mostly in the husk. Since you don't have that option, I would find a very dry room in your home...
The descriptions usually are pretty good about saying whether they are sweet or tart. Sweet ones are often "Bing" cherries. Sour ones are often referred to as pie cherries. Good luck!
Steve--I have wondered the same thing. I get the idea, but wouldn't that actually help increase the pest population in the garden, wherever they are?
me&thegals, who still uses the finger-squishing method to eradicate pests :D
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I dink around with the seeds, too, and usually add in sesame, which I forgot to mention :) Last time I didn't have either sesame or sunflower so stuck in poppy seeds. The kids thought it was loaded with bugs (flea beetles?) :D
We have both growing wild. As the mother of young kids, I'm not sure which is cooler--the maggot-looking white ones or the purple ones that leave purple bird poop everywhere :D
I plant my lettuce the way you see old-time pictures of women feeding scratch to their chickens :) This year, it was followed by a lot of rain, which washed the seeds into clumps. Those clumps of plants I broke up a bit and transplanted into bare patches. Both direct and transplanted worked...
How about Swiss chard quiche/pie? I have posted the recipe about a bazillion times but can't remember if I did on this thread or not :) Try searching for it, because it is a GREAT way to use up a lot of chard, stems and all, green onions, green garlic or whatever other green things you have...
Thanks, GT :) I had a bumper eggplant crop last year and have a small CSA so needed to find ways to use eggplant. Like you, it seemed to me like eggplant Parmesan was THE only recipe out there! Turns out there are many, many delicious ones. Maybe late summer I will have to start a thread on...
Congratulations! Isn't the market fun? My kids and I are on our third year, although we go very infrequently, and we really have a blast. This Sat, unfortunately, it drizzled the whole time so was not quite as fun.
Your table looks beautiful and your garden pictures in another thread quite...
Here it is :) You could easily leave out the macaroni. I don't think it would affect the recipe at all. Enjoy! I love the looks of those little cutie yellow eggplants :)
