    HomesteaderWife's 2017 Garden

Just brought in a few Jalapenos and some Yellow Squash yesterday. The Sweet Corn is doing pretty poorly thus far, but the Sorghum is shooting up to shoulder-height already. Part of my Gourds have developed runners, and they're growing pretty quickly! Tomatoes are still green, but all the...

    Baymule's 2017 Garden Thread

Hey @lcertuche - I agree with this! My husband won't have any other pickles with a meal but the ones we have made from our cucumbers. Nothing can compare to growing and canning your own. ;)

    OPINION NEEDED--FAST!!!

I know I am late responding here, but I usually don't trust it from Craigslist unless it's a local number calling or sending a text that sounds like what a human would actually text/asking questions. Too often I get these far out numbers from a different state trying to scam. I won't put down...

that was a wasted trip but fun

@moxies_chickienuggets - In Alabama I have been to a few different stores where they told me what days the shipments of .22 come in, and they said even though there is a limit on how many boxes you can buy, pawn shop owners line up when the shipment gets there to buy it out then re-sell in store...

that was a wasted trip but fun

I had to laugh at this, as I am on the opposite end in a way. I don't get to fish a lot, but when I do, I have separate tackle boxes and poles for fresh/salt water. I've been to Walmart recently and, yes, I was disappointed myself by the lack of casting spoons and rod selection. What I did find...

    HomesteaderWife's 2017 Garden

Well, thanks to a gun and a Labrador Retriever's help, we no longer have a rabbit problem. It has been eating our bean plants, and we finally caught him out there yesterday evening. The Lab went and brought it back proudly, and in the spirit of not wasting anything, I had the hide stretched and...

@Carol Dee - I saw their postings and one in particular they posted to someone's profile bothered me even more...not sure why they're doing this but hoping it gets caught soon!

    HomesteaderWife's 2017 Garden

As of May 21st, we have our gourds beginning to run and our Big Boy Purple Hull peas doing well as they sprout from the soil. Okra is starting to come up in a nice row, and the squash/cucumbers/green beans are healthy as can be! Tomato plants and pepper plants are growing larger each day! I have...

The corn is looking so good and healthy! It gets so tall later on that it will blow your mind- I couldn't believe our average stalks were 12ft high! Take lots of photos as it grows for sure- it's still hard to find info on this variety, so the more photos there are, I think it will benefit folks...

    Honeysuckle Syrup?

So the honeysuckle syrup is VERY sweet- I tried a bit of it! A dash of it in coffee or tea would add a little sweetness and flavor. @Zeedman - Violet syrup sounds more unique thank honeysuckle syrup! Wow!

    HomesteaderWife's 2017 Garden

@baymule - We have some Bloody Butcher seed as well that we will grow bulk of next year. It's a beautiful, thick dent corn that is crimson red in color and good for cornmeal. This will be the first time with the Blue Hopi but we are excited. I'm curious as to what kind of grain mill you have-...

    HomesteaderWife's 2017 Garden

@baymule - It is a variety of flint corn. It has higher protein than dent corns, so a lot of the time its ground up for flour. It can be eaten when young and in the milk stage as a sweet corn.

    HomesteaderWife's 2017 Garden

May 3rd, 2017: Cucumbers, green beans, carrots, some of the gourds, and sorghum are coming up now. Figs are on the trees now but very new still! Wild blackberries in the area have yet to bloom. Current pests to the garden are a single rabbit, and I stumbled across a whitetail deer today. It had...

    Honeysuckle Syrup?

@baymule- I have not yet tasted it. I put it in the fridge after letting it set out and it still, unfortunately, has remained liquid-like and not like syrup. I may need to re-do this and try and let it boil a bit longer, because it has not gotten the right consistency. The pleasant smell is not...

    Honeysuckle Syrup?

Followed the rest of the instructions through about a half an hour ago. It hasn't gotten really syrupy in consistency yet, but smells and looks so nice!
