I won't lie the beds were actually already there so I used them rather than start from scratch, I invested in a trapezoidal hoe and it is magnificent I can weed the rows in minutes without harming my back :)
Thank you the desert peas are difficult but so rewarding when they flower.
@marshallsmyth I'm posting the link to a photo of my bean and corn patch on Flickr so I don't have to upload them all here as it will be ongoing and photo heavy. This is my current offsite garden you can see three beds of beans there are another two beds planted yet to germinate and possible...
I ate the vegetables that everyone complained about which often included Favas and luckily I had a lot of homegrown food in my diet, as a child I made my pocket money selling produce to folks nearby or trading my way :) My father and I consider them a treat freshly shelled.
@digitS' I noticed they new site design has gone live for Prairie Garden :)
Actually one control method I used to hear from older gardeners coming through my old work is to dissolve some Vegimite in hot water and use it as a spray to control Aphids.
Some folks swear by it, I have not tested it...
Best grown as a cool season crop where I live, you plant them late summer to bloom before the weather gets too cold for pod set or plant them so they flower just temps get high enough at the end of winter or start of spring to initiate pod set. I grow Crimson Flowered as it is good to eat and...
I agree it is very much like crossing peas which I can do with ease as I have been breeding peas for a bit and you're right beans are just more fragile but a good pair of forceps or such helps.
I would be interested in that information about the two gene pools, maybe there is a particular...
I couldn't manage the camera work to put a tutorial together. I think there was a link to a tutorial in last years bean thread.
Also is at least once decent video on Youtube I think.
That is half the fun, I might not get what I am looking for but I'm happy with anything.
I think with bean seed coats you can get so many wonderful combinations it really feels like a creative canvas.
A fair question and simply put I'd rather a lighter purple than a dark purple or I would have used Anderson's Wonder which is a large Aubergine purple seed, plus Blooming Prairie and the others have purple pods which is another trait that would be nice.
I want to see how the color is inherited...
The main ones are that I'm crossing some yellow podded snaps with purple podded snaps. I am also trying to introduce the color from a purple like Blooming Prairie into a pattern like Jacob's Cattle.
I am also trying to make a purple and also a yellow version of the super thin CdC.
There are more...
I'll get on it, I've got beans flowering at home that I didn't get time to cross pollinate today but I will do tomorrow (they are in pots so I can sit them on the table to do the fiddly work)
I have beans slightly past their first true leaves at home in pots and on my loaned ground I have beans...
Tepary beans if you have good ground moisture tend to grow quickly and take advantage of the moisture but you need to have that ground moisture first otherwise you will be watering them a bit but like you said not as much as other beans.
I think I have about 12 different ones and among them I...
I still cannot find the information as I lost all my bookmarks but Robert Lobitz obtained seed from Germany I believe and Purple Rain, Blooming Prairie, Purple Diamond and Purple Rose were all closely related.
@flowerweaver Tepary beans are brilliant like that, I can plant them at the start of the season and get a good crop without watering them just going off soil moisture.
@journey11 You got some very very nice beans.
The Mt.Pima Burro & Caballito as well as the Annellino Giallo are lovely and Blooming Prairie is such a lovely color I could never eat it and it is productive :)
