When I lived in Queens, NY, I had a big rosemary plant, the best looking plant in the (tiny) backyard, year round. Then I moved 17 miles away to Nassau County and I cannot keep one alive. I think all the concrete in Queens made it just warm enough so my rosemary didn't die. I have tried every...
You will also start to get very familiar with your particular weed seedlings in your area after a few years of pulling up the same things all the time.
Hi Davaroo! Welcome. I am bluie over at BYC. I have abused many kinds of clematis. Most recently, I have a 4 year old Niobe that was just starting to get going, and then my husband decided to clean out the flower bed. I hope it is still alive. He killed the sage. My jackmanii, normally a...
The kids think I am lazy because I am going to let the chickens stir the compost pile while they are adding poo to it. I also raked a big pile of impossible to shred wet leaves out into a thin layer and the chickens are doing a great job of aerating them so they dry faster. Chickens are great!
I found a head board and foot board of an old bunk bed in the yard (still finding weird stuff 7 years later). Its made out of really heavy wood. I had my son nail some plastic mesh over the open parts and I am going to use it for a compost bin. I think I will pile up cinder blocks (abundant in...
I finished my three new raised beds a couple of days ago. I have a long way to go on filling them. Besides that I have mostly been cleaning up the yard (a few years overdue for the back of the yard). I have been shredding oak leaves and adding them to compost piles or raised beds. Home Depot...
I am wondering about this too. I dumped the contents of the coop (pine shavings and lots of poo) into my three new raised beds, thinking I would not be planting until next year. Now my dh is actually excited about planting and he wants it to be this year. We are going to get some topsoil and...
Its probably a good idea to wait if you can, because as a new homeowner, how are you going to decide where to put them. You want to assess the situation for a full growing season (if you can stand it!). I think we spent the first growing season pulling out overgrown shrubs.
I don't know about the timing, but make sure you plant them the right depth. Peonies won't bloom if planted too deep. They are wondrous flowers, possibly my favorite. Be prepared to support the stems. Congratulations on the new house. It is like Christmas. I moved into my house 7 years ago...
I'm jealous. :drool I don't even have a garden yet. I am getting ready to build some raised beds. Up to now, I have just been plopping down an occasional veggie plant in a flower bed.
