Has anyone here tried cherry toms in a hanging basket?
I did a search of the web and saw a few ideas, but I don't want to waste my time!
I also have a SIL who tried the topsy-turvy last year with disappointing results and I was thinking about making her a hanging basket if anyone thinks that...
I just ordered a couple of Earth Boxes because I am in a rental with no room for a garden this year.
The EBs are only 11 inches deep. My plan is to plant more shallow rooted veggies, I am hoping squash, beans, peas, herbs, cukes, peppers etc in the EB and then I will pick up a few half whiskey...
Do you have kids? One year I had my little one paint rocks white then paint a pic of the veggie, she made tomato, carrot, cuke etc. They were pretty cute.
My worry is not the weeds, the soil is impossible to dig...hence the idea of a 24" deep raised bed...the plants would be able to penetrate down much deeper and over time the ground underneath would soften and allow even better growth.
I posted this over on the SS board but figured I could probably get some good feedback here :)
I want to put in 2 5X20 raised beds. Here are my options...
Rent a tiller ($100 for the day) and till the areas and then build 12' raised beds
~ OR~
Build deeper beds like 24" and just do a lasagna...
I think I am in the right area for this, mostly upper middle class, dual income families with more money than time for things such as this....but would enjoy having a garden.
Anybody else have any input or see potential draw backs?
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts....I agree a small local with limited drive time is crucial. Being the gardening geek that I am I never considered that it may be more cost effective for someone to just buy organic.
All good points thank you :)
I have been toying with the idea of creating a small business around building veggie gardens for people. Most people want to buy organic and a lot would like to have their own gardens, but with so many dual income families time is a factor.
Please tell me what kind of holes you can shoot into...
From what I have experienced your probelme is more with the food mix than moisture level. If you are giving them too much acid (coffee grounds citrus etc) they will try to escape it. Try to limit those things.
For now something sweet would probably help along with the egg shells....watermelon...
What do I do about a rat in my garden? He is eating my tomatoes before I can pick them.
I suppose I can set a trap but I am just really creeped out! UGH!
Sorry, I don't I just wing it! I would guess about 2/3 toms, 1/3 onion and as much chile and cilantro as you like, a nice medium size drizzle of olive oil...adjust lime & salt to taste :)
Really no right or wrong way!
I have picked clean a couple of pepper plants (Anaheim & Serrano) I would like to see another flush of blossoms and another harvest of peppers as our warm season will be continuing on for a while.
Should I fertilize them or just leave the alone?
Tink,
Mine is more traditional:
chopped tomatoes
chopped red onion
diced jalepeno or serrano
chopped cilantro
drizzle of olive oil
hefty squeeze of lime
Generous sprinkling of sea salt
Brought up to a boil and hot packed/processed according to the USDA guidelines (think I boiled it for ten...
I don't think there is a way to preserve that fresh taste, but what I do to canned salsa is to add more fresh cilantro. red onion and a fresh squeeze of lime when serving and that really brightens it up!
Thanks for the input and clarification.
So maybe you can give my some advice and help me figure out what is going on. My tomatoes that I planted in April are not thriving (they are big, but bare on the bottom 2/3 of the plants.) It is probably that the compost I brought home for my raised bed...
