I prefer the ground. I would go broke trying to deal with bins. I think many bins are counterproductive. A good bin lets the compost come in direct contact with the ground and all the beneficial organisms and worms it has to offer imo.
What I don't get about the sq. foot gardening is the site says it lowers your water usage. My experiences with raised beds is it takes more watering. The more I look at sq. foot gardening the more I want to try it though.
I have been having problems with fire ants getting in my worm bins. After the last mass loss I have decided when I go fishing I will just dig the naturally occurring worms in my compost piles when I want to go fishing.
I have a crossbow but I can only eat so many deer and enough are usually given to me. I hate to say it but two less deer will bother my garden. A pregnant doe got run over today.:(
I don't know if it helps for other pests. It can slow deer down because they would rather eat in cover than out in the open. If your garden buts right up to the woods all bets are off.
I think it depends on seed and storage. Me and my dad decided to plant a food plot for deer once. I bought a big bag of deer plot mix and we disked the area it was going in. My grand dad told us he had an abundance of old seeds he wanted to get rid of so we needed to use them in the food plot...
Just a thought. Ever think about building a grenhouse above a hog pen? They put off alot of body heat. The manure puts off heat too I guess. My grandma used to have a hog pen under an oak tree. It kept its leaves all winter.
Planted rose bushes, tomatoes, corn, pole beans, okra, and cucumbers today. I still need to plant my potatoes squash and peppers. I wish I would have started some things a little earlier but tiller was broke so I am playing catch up. I may cut an oak down soon so I can start on my orchard.
I am no expert with rosemary but its very easy. I bought mine in a six inch peat pot at home depot. I planted it in full sunlight. The area I planted it in did not have great soil so I dug a hole bigger than the plant needed and used the old soil for fill elsewhere. I then put bagged topsoil and...
I would maybe try a better brand stihl and husqavarna are good. They can be costly but they are worth it. Your chainsaw may just need a carb adjustment. If you do get a new saw make sure its over 40 cc and does not have a catylitic converter. All small ones have cats and it really weakens them down.
Digits I envy your soil. I have this great Ga clay to deal with.
Chickhamm I am no expert. I think a drip irrigation under some type of mulch could work well depending on what you are growing. Mulch helps retain moisture. An elevated rain barrel could be a supply for drip irrigation. I also...
I planted onions garlic and strawberries today. There may be a few freezing days left so I will mulch the strawberries and cover them if needed. It will be easy enough to cover strawberries they are in a tractor tire. I will be planting grass seed and 18 better boy tomato plants over the next...
It would be a small orchard. I would prefer espaliering myself. I think my wife is just enthused by the novelty of having 5 varieties of apples from one tree 5 pears from another plus a fruit cocktail thing. I really don't want an orchard. I prefer bartering with the neighbor across the street...
