That's an easy one, all of the genes in a hybrid tomato came from other tomatoes. There's no way for a tomato to get genes from a fish outside of a lab. To me that is going to far. Others may not feel the same way, and I don't want to make GMOs illegal, I just want more objective testing (done...
GMOs are "substantially equivalent" when they want to get them into the food supply, but they are "unique" when they want to get a patent. It just strikes me as fishy...
I think of them as dinner. When does deer season start? :gig
Actually, you CAN shoot a deer when it's not deer season, if it's being a "nuisance" (at least here in Texas), but you have to call the game warden to pick up the carcass. You then would have to answer to the game warden, and probably...
My cucumbers looked just like that before I pulled them out. Between the squash bugs and the cucumber beetles, they didn't have a chance. Neither did my zucchini, yellow squash, patty pan, or my acorn squash. Then there was the corn earworms, and the crickets. And don't get me started on the...
The only thing I know about tansy is that tansy oil placed on a sponge was used as a form of birth control before there were more effective methods. I can't imagine that would be useful information, though. Hopefully someone else knows more than me.
Okay Jim, just as soon as I have a few pods ready to pick I'll try it out. :) I'm supposed to be picking the pods when they're less than 4 inches, right? I have the cast iron pan (from my mama) but I don't use veggie oil, so I'm gonna hope lard will do for the frying.
Sorry Jim, I just fed about 25 pods to the goats. They love it. I have the Clemson Spineless but it still makes me itch, I can't imagine what the other stuff would do to me. Apparently some people are more susceptible than others, and I'm one of them. Give me you're fried okra recipe and I'll...
Right now I'm wishing I had never planted okra. Hubby was sure he liked it...but he doesn't. I thought pickling would make it taste good...but it doesn't. AND every time I harvest the stuff (for the goat, who's the only one who will eat the stuff) I get terribly itchy from the plant itself and...
It's miserable here in Texas too.We hit 108 on Wednesday. Then 103 yesterday. I was also hoping for some quality time with Debby, but she decided to head to Florida instead of Texas.
I'm almost at that point. I put in 15 cherry tomato plans. Why? 'Cause I wasn't thinking about how prolific the littler buggers are. I have done about 5 batches of halved cherry tomatoes in the dehydrator, and I'll be doing more today.
My German Green tomatoes aren't producing very many fruits...
I'm going to be putting in more in a few weeks. My Romas are starting to fizzle out so I'll need more for that space. I'm here in zone 8a, so I'm sure it will work where you are.
I've lost the war. My zucchini and yellow squash were reduced to piles of dead and dying leaves and a few cucumber plants turned yellow and lost most leaves. I gave up and pulled them. When I did a whole stream of the darn bugs came pouring out of the hole in the ground. :sick
Luckily the season...
I've been cruising around the internet looking for recipes. So far, I want to try drying some for fruit leather, watermelon sorbet, and watermelon syrup. Hubby does plan to sell quite a few of them, the kids will help and earn themselves a little spending money. :)
We picked our first Sugar Baby watermelon yesterday. It was only about 2 pounds, but it was very sweet and had a great texture. Since hubby has hone hog wild with the watermelon this year (he planted nearly 100 hills!) I'm wondering if there's anything to do with watermelons besides eat them...
That makes sense. I don't know if the farmer over fertilized, but we had a really early spring, really high rainfall totals, and a lot of the grass grew very lush, very fast this year here in central Texas. I knew that some grasses could produce cyanide if stressed, but I didn't realize that...
Baymule, I think I'm north of you (Waco-ish area) but the only time I had any luck with spinach was when I planted it in February. I got a pretty decent crop before it go too hot.
My grandpa swears by a tobacco juice spray for his tomatoes. I've heard it can spread tobacco mosaic virus to the tomatoes, but he's done it for more than 70 years now, and his mother did it before him. He also suggested that I sprinkle snuff (powdered tobacco) to get rid of my squash bugs. I...
