    Mushy pickles?

I only use pickling cucumbers for eating and canning pickles. They have smaller seeds and are never bitter, in my own dozen or so years of experience. I know that the skin of the pickling cucs is much different texture than "slicing" cucs. I've never heard of anybody making pickles with...

    Pressure cooking questions

I think if you contact your local cooperative extension office they will test it for you. I know my local Farmer's Market, sponsered by my USDA cooperative extension office, tests pressure canners this time of year every Saturday morning in the mall parking lot.

    pickling cuc ?

What would cause some of my pickling cucs to turn yellow on the vine when only little tiny still? Some of the leaves are turning yellow down towards the base of the vines as well. I'm really disappointed in my garden this year. The weather has just not been warm enough, I think, to get a good...

    Pressure cooking questions

I canned spaghetti sauce with meat in my pressure canner before. The flavor was as per my usual, but the texture of the meat was "mealy" or grainy. I didn't like the texture at all. Maybe I overcooked it, as I browned the meat before canning it.

    What did you pick today?

I actually got to pick a tomato the other day. It was the first to form on my plants, which are currently very full of immature and green fruits. The ripe tomato was a Black Russian and was a victim of whatever makes a tomato look all knarly and twisted. It looked really ugly but it tasted...

    My beans are coming up.

OK, so if I understand correctly, its plant one seed for the bugs and one seed for the birds. How many seeds are you supposed to plant for the baby ground squirrels that have even learned how to climb a 6ft tall T-post trellis? I've probably got 30 bean plants and they are steadily working...

    fruit fly control in kitchen

Isn't it more likely that the fruit flies' eggs are already on the fruit and hatch out sitting in your kitchen? I usually only have a problem here with fruit flies when I buy bananas from the store. I keep my bananas in a seperate room from all of my other fruit and the fruit flies only appear...

    How much do you reuse?

I don't reuse them for canning again, but I do use them to cover a canning jar that I use to keep a pantry staple like dry beans, coconut, choc. chips, etc.

    What did you pick today?

today I picked a couple of pickling cucs that are pretty big. They'll be great size for either B&B or sliced dill pickles. I also picked yet another crook-necked squash. :o To my horror I found field corn growing up in my rosebush pot, thanks to the ground squirrels. Its a case of too many...

The best 25 cents I've ever spent

I just wanted to tell you all about my new fave book that I got at a garage sale for 25 cents. It was published in 1964 by the food editors of Farm Journal. It has 352 pages. It is the Freezing & Canning Cookbook and is a gold mine. It even has lots of recipes for make ahead meals to keep in...
