My herbs are planted in recycled ice chests that I spray painted dark green. One was red and one was blue before. Neither ice chest would keep an iceberg cold in a blizzard, if you know what I mean. In one ice chest I have planted from seed Italian parsley, sweet basil and chives. In the...
Tutter, what you do to make apple pie filling in a jar is to cold pack your apples into sterilized jars, pour over the thickened cinnamon syrup, seal and process the jars. I got the recipe at: http://www. thatsmyhome.com. That has got to be my favorite website of all time. :D
I agree with Pat and Tutter but did want to tell you one thing. I recently pulled out an opened jar of my homemade B&B pickles that had been opened and in my fridge for a minimum of more than a year. They were just as good as the day they were first opened, in taste, texture and appearance...
With my daughter's help, I was able to put up ten 8-oz jars of low-sugar apricot jam. I also prepped enough apricots for two more batches and froze these, seperated into the two batches, with the required amount of sugar. I used the Ball packet of pectin for no-sugar jam as my store was all...
I am a diabetic and so is my mom. I found this web page to make sugar-free jam.

Oh, that sounds just wonderful. I'm with putting all the cream in that it calls for myself, but then I don't eat much at a time. Peppermint ice cream has always been one of my faves since childhood, but I really don't like that crushed peppermint candy the commercial ice cream makers always...
I've been scouting around my "neighborhood" for a good place to pick our wild blackberries when they get ripe. I want someplace not too far from home and easy for this disabled woman to actually get to, with a little assistance. I put neighborhood in quotes because I live along a major...
I'm finding it strange that some of you think that pickling cucs are bitter. I've never had a bitter one, no matter how long I leave them on the vine. I usually plant what is called, "National Pickling cucumber" I let some of them get big to make my B&B pickles and to eat. I'm sorry that...
Just more squash here today. In fact, I've got to tell DS to leave them on the vine a little longer. Some of the ones he brought in today were still pretty green, supposed to be YELLOW crook-necked squash. Maybe he's color blind?
I'm sorry your cucs are bitter. It is for that very reason that for years I've only planted pickling cucs for all purposes, pickling and fresh eating. They have NEVER been bitter for me.
Cassandra, I'm with you. :clap I too H-A-T-E all things horehound/licorice/rootbeer/anise/fennel scented or flavored. It is one of those things that you either love or hate with not much middle ground involved and don't let anybody try to tell you any different.
I just wanted to let you know that my 1965 Kerr Home Canning book gives a very similar recipe for "in-the-jar saurekraut" but it doesn't give exact shelf life data, just says will "keep for many months" Sorry.
SAUERKRAUT (MADE IN JARS)
Use good, sound heads of mature cabbage. 1 lb. of salt...
DS went out to the garden today and picked 6-8 baby crook-necked squashes. We're gonna slice them thin and sautee in butter with some thinly sliced onions too..oh, plus a bit of garlic.
OEGBman, The jam looks wonderful. I know I probably don't need to advise you of this, but I'm gonna anyways. I don't know how old you are or how old your grandma is, but take every opportunity to learn what you can from her. Absorb her knowledge like a sponge. Ask her about the stuff only...
It was my master plan by planting my herb garden in old ice chests to drag them into my green house when it starts to get too cool outside. I sure hope this works, although my own chives are a gonner.
Here is a recipe out of my 1964 USDA "Making Pickles and Relishes at home" booklet. It sure seems easy to do.
DILLED GREEN BEANS
green beans, whole..............4 pounds (about 4 qts)
Hot red pepper, crushed.......1/4 tsp. per pint jar
Whole mustard seed.............1/2 tsp. per pint jar...
Nubsmum, what a great idea. Thank you. I do use a peppermint foot lotion and bet that scrub would be great on tired feet and legs, especially for diabetics like me. I would assume that you should use the kosher/coarse salt, right? If I had a bathtub, shower only here, I'd be tempted to put...
