    Tomato Worms

I get them...this year it seems there are only a few. I picked off several but I know there is probably more ....I hope I am not doing my tomatoes a disservice by turning a blind eye to a few worms!

    Corn troubles

18-22 after the silk appears? Oh my...I have clearly waited too long! So should I have picked them even though they did not feel filled out? I guess they would have been small but tasty. I did water them by hand and I thought I was pretty consistent but perhaps I wasn't. I do want to put in a...

    bottom rot in tomatoes.

Blossom End Rot. You need to add some calcium to your soil. Try lightly digging in some crushed egg shells.

How to use crushed egg shell in garden

I would suggest that you get a soil testing kit and see what nutrients your soil is lacking....based on lack of production, I would guess that you need phosphorous. Run the test and then take your results to your local nursery and they will tell you what to add to the soil to help correct it. I...

When to start cool season crops?

Excellent Tutter...thank you! I do not plan to plant too much. I only have a 100sq foot garden bed and everything else is crammed in here and there in my flower beds...just getting ready to dig up an area for another crop of corn, more melons and some potatoes. Frankly I don't even know WHERE I...

    Corn troubles

Thanks for the feed back everyone. I did use the block method and also wanted to mention that the flavor of the corn was not great...it was pretty starchy. Wondering if that means anything or if it is just the variety?

    rooting rose cutting-- help please

Most roses are grafted onto root stock. If your start a cutting it most likely will not be true to the mother plant.

When to start cool season crops?

Thank you Chastam, very good info. Where I am still struggling (maybe I am just plain stupid) is determining when to start my cool season crops. I understand how to squeeze in one more summer crop as you described, but I am not sure when it is appropriate to start my cool season veggies...

    Can I cold pack salsa?

Hot pack - heat processing the food item to be canned and then putting hot food into hot jars to be canned. Cold pack - raw packing...not heating the food first before it goes into a jar, packing in cold/raw food to then be canned.

What did you can (freeze, dehydrate, preserve) today?

Thanks NC...I just put it in the fridge, we'll eat it with in the week :) I would really like to cold pack it but every recipe I have found says that it has to be heat precessed first. I don't really understand, why can you cold pack fruits & pickles but not salsa?

My Tomatillo Verde: Lots of blossoms, but no fruit

I am growing tomatillo this year for the first time as well. I only have one plant but it has set a lot of fruit, no pollination problems. They are fairly slow to mature, but then my tomatoes have been too, I think my region is just cooler than normal this year and that is having an impact. How...

What did you can (freeze, dehydrate, preserve) today?

I went to the farmers market and got an assortment of beautiful tomatoes...deep red, pink, yellow & orange. I made some wonderful salsa...then got a wild hair about canning some. It only made 3 pint sized jars, but I am new to canning so everything in sight is at risk! LOL! I followed the...

    Can I cold pack salsa?

I love fresh style salsa and made a large batch. Every recipe that I find online is hot pack...I really would rather cold pack it to preserve as much of the fresh texture as possible. Can anyone advise??

the continuing adventures of a newbie canner

nccountrygirl...I was referring to her post above. I was just guessing that if it sealed while she was wiping it could have still been pretty warm and maybe she just needs to let them set for a longer amount of time. I think the pickles look yummy BTW...I have some Lemon cukes I need to do...

the continuing adventures of a newbie canner

I am new to canning myself but this is what I do (because this is what I read to do)....Pull the jars out of the canner and set on a wooden cutting board that is covered with a towel. Don't touch the jars, just set them out and then cover them all with a towel to protect them from...
