I just got dogged out by a woman on another forum for posting that I killed a mole in my compost.I was shoveling compost into a wheel barrow and uncovered a mole.I threw it to the chickens and they tore it to shreds. She said that I should have left it alone, that moles are beneficial.I informed...
I purposely let some of mine get about 10"-12" long and about 2" in diameter.I slice them 1/4"thick,coat them with olive oil and seasoning and grill them.I love them this way.
I also grate the larger ones, mix with flour, onion and egg and fry them.Mighty tasty!

I believe splitting is caused by too much water.I was working out of town from Wednesday until today,so obviously I couldn't tend to my garden. We had a huge rain Thursday and Friday, after a dry spell of 3 weeks. When I got home this afternoon,I found many tomatoes split and ruined.
The Marion...
Today,I planted Merit yellow sweet corn,to be my second crop. It's pretty late for my area, but the County Extension Service recommends it until July15.
I also planted a second crop of Top-Pick southern peas.I've planted them in mid August and they still made.
It's very dry here,so I have to...
I'm having the same problem.I raised some guineas just for this purpose;but they were raised in the pen with the chickens, think they are chickens, and they won't leave the pen.I take them out at night and roost them in the garden and at dawn they fly back into the chicken pen.Guineas are the most...
I plant a variety called "Top Pick".The seed pods develop on a stem that rises above the foliage, about waist high. They are very prolific and for the most part, most of the pods mature at the same time. They get so heavy with peas, the stem bends over, but it's still better than picking them off the...
I hadn't thought of that,Steve.My corn rows aren't but 30' long,so that won't be a big chore.
We're bracing for another round of afternoon thunderstorms today and tomorrow.

I wrap newspaper around the stems and make sure it is at least 2" under the soil.I've never had any cut down using this method.
Next year I'm going to start my seeds in toilet tissue rolls and plant them in the garden with the cardboard roll intact.

Yesterday I came home from work and found my garden in shambles after we got heavy wind and rain. This is the second time this has happened this spring.Waist high corn flat on the ground;okra, butterbeans, snap beans, southern peas and squash plants blown over and pounded into the ground.
It seems...
I didn't mulch them, therefore, many of the fruits were on the ground.I searched on Google for strawberry problems and found several fruit problems caused by fungus. The berries get brown spots on them and then turn gray and moldy from the fungus.I'll try this again next year because it's over for...
Last year I made a 5'X8' raised strawberry bed, filled it with good soil and compost and planted 10 June bearing plants.Don't know what variety they were.I pulled off all the blooms so the plants would grow large,as instructed.
They spread and covered the bed and this spring they were covered...
Elf,I don't know about Georgia, but in Mississippi the soil and water conservation office provides the site assessment and recommendations for free.At the time I had the work done, the state would provide 60% of the cost of building a new pond, but would not financially assist with the cost of...
I bit the bullet and fixed the spillway myself.I filled it in and formed up a spillway 2" deep and 20' wide.I put rebars in on 12" centers in both directions and pour it with 5000 psi concrete. It's 8' wide with 2' deep footings and 12" deep on the driving surface.Let it rain!!!
Now when it...
In 1994,my wife and I bought 80 acres that had a 2 acre pond on it.The dam was breached right in the center of it.I was told the man that built the dam just pushed up dirt and anything else he could get to build the dam.No core ditch or proper spillway installed was the downfall of the project...
I put composted chicken manure under my tomatoes.I believe fresh manure will burn your plants.I may try some dried manure before it is composted, just to experiment.

No big deal.I'd stake them and tie them up as best as I could.I sure wouldn't pull any of them up unless I were going to plant them somewhere else.
Live and learn. It ain't the end of the world.

Me,too.I don't over there as much now.Just too many nonsense posts to sort through to get to something serious.Example:
"My chicks are hatching! What do I do?"
"Need a hatching buddy!Who's with me?"
"Does your chicken tolerate diapers?" Please!
At that age, they should be ready for the garden, weather permitting.Did you add any fertilizer to the starting soil mixture?
I start mine in 1/2 garden soil and 1/2 compost and they do great.I don't usually repot them before transplanting them into the garden.
I would say they are root bound...
As soon as your tomato plants start producing suckers off the main stem, pinch them off and root them in some fairly moist soil. You can have tomatoes in various stages of growth and you will be assured of fresh tomatoes until frost gets them.
Plant more summer squash, southern peas, bush snap...
