I harvest them when the tops fall down. They usually aren't all ready at the same time. If you do it too soon, they won't dry properly and won't store well.
They claim they grow well in any climate. They have produced the biggest onions I have ever grown.

Problem to me is they are a hybrid, which I'm trying to steer clear of.

They are supposed to be. I know the Candys are, as we just used up the last of this years a few weeks ago. I found they keep much better in the fridge. I have a fridge in my basement set on 45 degrees. It works out good, because that is the temp I prefer for storing eggs, so fridge is always...
Well, it's that time again. I will be starting my onion seeds this weekend. I am trying Ailsa Craig's(heirloom) this year. I have some Candy seeds left that I will also use up. I love the Candy, as they get as big as softballs. It will be interesting to see how the Ailsa Craigs do in...
Thanks to both of you. I never thought about the 3rd dim of tree size as it pertains to total yield. I was just looking at pear trees again and noticed there is no semi-dwarfs for pears where I am looking to buy (Stark Bros). Is it plausable to keep a standard size tree trimmed to the point...
I am in the process of choosing the type and size of apple and pear trees to plant. Initially I thought I wanted semi-dwarf, but now I'm thinking maybe go with the dwarf. I have a limited amount of area in which to plant my trees, so I want to space them as close as I can to fully utilize the...
I like these as well. We still have a few left in the fridge from this Summer. One thing I noticed, the longer you store them, the hotter they get. I could eat them like an apple right after drying, now they are getting almost too hot to eat on a sandwich. I had some bigger than softballs.
I am going to try it. I can set the temp on my sportman down to I think 70 degrees. I may see if I can unhook the fan, so it doesn't dry them out so fast.
Thanks.
I am looking to buy a few starts of these for this Spring. Anybody have a good source, or have a patch of them that needs thinned and would be willing to sell/ship some to me? Either would be great!
Thanks.
With Winter upon us, as always, I am planning this coming year's garden and trying to improve techniques. I had an idea the other day. I always have trouble finiding a place warm enough to get my seeds to germinate. I got to thinking about a way to do this without buying a germination mat. I...
As long as I have good germination and everything turns out to be what it is supposed to be, I will be very pleased with Pinetree. I was totally surprised when my order was delivered only a few days after ordering.
I can't wait to taste some of these heirloom veggies. Next thing I need to...
We decided a few months ago we wanted to plant all heirloom seeds in our garden this year. After being bombarded w/ seed catolog in the mail, I searched each one and compared all the pricing. We decided to go with Pinetree Garden Seeds.

When I save seeds, I let the fruit(peppers/tomatoes) fully mature. I take the seeds out and put them in a brown paper bag to reduce drying time. I usually let them dry for 2-3 weeks. If the "mother" plant is a hybrid, you may have plants that grow from the saved seeds, but they may not...
About two weeks after I planted those 4 rows, I considered planting 2 more rows, as I had seed left. I'm actually glad I didn't. We could have had another 40 quarts to deal with.
The beans just won't quit. We thought we were done, but did another 14 quarts. So we ended up doing a total of 84 quarts. We will still probably have enough for at least one or two more meals. I would have never guessed four 30' rows would produce that many beans. Looks like we'll be eating...
My guess is it's probably not "sweet" corn anymore. As corn sits, the sugars turn into starch. Refrigeration slows done this convertion. Being 8 days old and unrefrigerated, it's probably still edible, but will not be sweet and is most likely very starchy. You're chickens will still...
