    Landscape Gardening

I am prohibited by my city from having a garden in my front yard. However, I can plant things in my front yard: just not rows of garden plants or crops. So, when / if I run out of space in the BACK yard and want to go on to the side and front yards, watch out! First, I'll put some berry bushes...

    Asparagus!!!

Very nice! We had wild asparagus in quite a few places growing up. We never had to plant it. I hope mine does as well as yours! This is my first time planting it. I intentionally planted mine a bit too close together. We'll hope the gardening gods don't frown on me for it.

    what to plant together?

Toss a few marigold seeds around other things. Supposedly it helps with insects. I like marigolds and am not willing to take a year of NOT planting them to test whether or not the insects are worse.

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

Here is the garden about three days ago: Today, though a bit blurry: A close up of one flowerbed: Oink! The other flowerbed: Some of the other plants, waiting for warmer weather: Asparagus Bed: Bricks are beside each planting, so I know where to watch. Yes, they are a bit close...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

For $12, I bought this aerogarden as an experiment in whether or not I wanted to try hydroponics gardening. I found it at a local thrift store. I promptly spent more than that to order the parts I needed for it (the inserts to hold seeds). Here is a series of pictures to show what I've done...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

Another view. You can see the lowbush blueberry in this one. Way over by the blue hammock is where the gogi berries, currants, and bush apricots are (well the gogi berries aren't here yet.) The Fig & Hazelnuts are yet to be planted. They will go in the main orchard area. I have no idea where...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

A couple of views of the main fruit area. A number of the small fruits -- currants, gogi berries, and manchurian bush apricots, are in another corner. Hopefully, they aren't in an area where they get too much shade. I had to risk it a bit, though.

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

Turning the other direction, you can see my very crooked garden bed. This is temporary and will be greatly expanded in the next couple of years. Hence my lack of concern about the poor aesthetics. The garden currently has spring crops: greens, lettuce, radishes, onions, peas, etc. The tires...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

There is one more row of small fruits to the left here, that you can't see. That is for blueberries. The two rows of wire cages on the left of this picture are for bramble fruits. The back row has some brambles and several gooseberries. You can't really see it, but at the very back there is...

Can we talk about fertilizing tomatoes?

Well, I'm all about organics, but my tomatoes get miracle grow potting mix and miracle grow fertilizer. I'm about organics, but I'm also about awesome tomatoes! In fact, I really need to fertilize my tomato seedlings this weekend. Thanks for reminding me! Maybe in a year or two when I have a...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

I still have the pool area and I haven't TOUCHED the front yard yet. ;) The pool will be converted someday for more growing space. It's huge -- with all of the cement that surrounds it we're talking about an area that's something like 40x30 foot of more space. (Or maybe it's 32x24...haven't...

    Having Trouble Starting Lettuce fromSeeds

A quarter inch is a bit deep. Just scatter a handful of soil around or lightly rake over the seeds and pat it down with your hands. Rule of thumb for most seeds: plant as deep as the seed is wide (not long). Read though, too. There is some oddball type out there that you can't cover at all...

    Question about tomato plants?

Read here: http://gardening.about.com/od/totallytomatoes/qt/Tomato-Companions.htm It will give you ideas about what to/not to plant near tomatoes. In reality, I ignore a lot of the things it says. I always plant my peppers and tomatoes close. They do fine...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

So, it's time for my most recent update for my orchard & garden. My Boomerang Lilac arrived today. It's a hair beat up from shipping, but should survive. My knocked (by accident) my pretty patio tomato plant from a table to the concrete today. Urp. Lost a few leaves & it was loose in the...

    Having Trouble Starting Lettuce fromSeeds

I didn't keep records last year and had a low pepper germination rate. I suspect it was due to this pack of seeds. I'm chucking them all into a pot later this year and if they grow, they grow. If not, they go. ;)

    Having Trouble Starting Lettuce fromSeeds

At least you don't have mystery peppers! I had a row of peppers that didn't germinate. After waiting a LONG time, I got sick of waiting. I needed to plant a different kind of peppers, so I reused the cubes. (They should have germinated two weeks before.) So, I replanted in the same cubes...

    Having Trouble Starting Lettuce fromSeeds

I must be lucky. Lettuce germinates for me like rabbits reproduce. I just dig up the soil, rake it a bit, toss (scatter) the seeds, sprinkle on a few handfuls of soil, and pat it down. Step back, and wait. It grows. If the weather is cold, it may take a couple of weeks, but it grows. This...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

You're welcome. I've been reading about the various hydroponics methods. I think I'm going to start two: a deep water culture and an ebb/flow (also called a flood and drain). Later, I might try a Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) and see how it goes. This looks like one of those things that can...

    Easter Update: Ordered my orchard...

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! I found the missing receipt! Now, I should be able to get my money back. What a relief! It was in my spring jacket pocket. I found it there after tearing everything apart, dumping papers everywhere, etc. I still have mess to clean up from that and won't get to it for...

Someone must have spliced some rabbit genes into my cells...

Thanks! The greenhouse isn't going to be a project for this year, or probably even next year. I can't put the money into it quite yet, especially because we've had a lot of extra medical expenses this year already and a lot more to come. I will get a small harvest of fruit this year --...
