    A Seed Saver's Garden

In the cases where I experienced a different flower type/color than pictured it was beyond those kinds of factors. Flesh toned daffodils like Petit Fours were the standard bright yellow, tulips that were not anything like the box indicated. For some reason bulbs in particular have especially...

Furry Ice Cream Wads? I mean we don't call peas beans, but they're in a pod too...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

A miracle happened today. Well, at least, what is a miracle to me. For years I've hoped that a peony exists somewhere that is a true, deep red red. I've bought peonies once or twice that claimed it was this red, and was only - disappointingly - standard dark pink. Which I already have. Took...

I watched a video on these beans @Pulsegleaner, interesting. That white stuff looks like pith to me, sort of wild that is has such a sweet taste. Never had mangosteen yet. Someday. The plants are nitrogen fixers, maybe that's part of why 'bean' is in the name.

    A Seed Saver's Garden

Frost risk tonight. That was unexpected as yesterday there was no sign of that in the forecast; so, I didn't plant the tomatoes as I thought I would. Only a minimum amount of stuff is out there, and I covered most of it minus corn and sunchokes. I suspect the sunchokes can handle a bit of...

So the towering challenge to full-day sunlight for my pole beans has finally been defeated. And it feels magnificent. Didn't measure it, but this stump several feet across. Second photo, stump is just behind the far rhubarb - that whole area was taken by the giant spruce, which shaded a lot...

My new perennial pansies! Love these colors. I really hope it's true that they'll survive winter here. I underplanted my roses with pansies, periwinkle and lemon balm since roses take awhile to fill out and start to bloom. I noticed as I trimmed the roses today that, except for the shrub...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

Yes, tomato seed savers often do that. I've seen it less with pepper seed saving, usually people just cover a row. But people who use the blossom bagging technique all seem to say the same thing, that the bags tend to blow off in wind. I once saw a photo where a seed saver had built sturdy...

Ok, checked Seeds of Plenty and that doesn't look like a P. vulgaris bean so I don't think that's it.

I got it in a trade with a fellow who found me on instagram! Yes, my seeds look exactly as you describe, brown and mottled. I'll check out Seeds of Plenty, I hope this may be the one! This trader sort of specializes in rare American heirlooms from Appalachia, I'm guessing this is one of...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

I discovered this week that my Devil's claw plants grow to 4 or 5 feet wide. 🫣 This means I'll have to throw some out, because that is way too large for my garden, and for a novelty crop to boot. I could crowd them I guess, and that would probably limit their size. I still haven't hammered in...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

It's an option for sure, but it has problems too. Hard to cover to the ground growing plants with the mesh, and determined bees can still get in at ground level. Then they get trapped in there and go a bit flower crazy in there, probably causing more crossing than if there were no mesh at all.

I put my first and only beans straight into the ground today, the Sakaguchi Kang Wong runner bean seeds. I overplanted just in case, and I have quite a lot of seed now so I can manage that luxury of overplanting. The weather has been pretty decent at night, going mostly as low as 14C/52F. Of...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

I'm sorry that I don't have much good news for you @Vanalpaca! Bees are a real problem for seed saving! There are some tricks, like you mention with tomatoes - which is mostly about saving tomatoes from early blooms, so the flowers have had less chance of bees visiting. My honest opinion is...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

I used to by psyllium powder at the natural food store, and mix it with water. I realized how awful both the taste and more so texture was, so I think I tried mixing it with juice too. I still remember these little chunks that remained in the cup if I didn't mix it properly. In the end it was...

I think so. It's a subject I plan to look into a little. Apparently, it's not absorbed or digested in the stomach but the colon where it's instead fermented by bacteria. It's a prebiotic, and good for gut health though. Reading a tiny bit about it I can see why it was considered a good crop...

Put my corn starts in today. That felt good, but I don't think I started enough seeds this year. I was rushing because I was late and didn't seed things as I normally would. Oh well, it'll be what it is! Whatever gets eaten will be relished! 'Simonet' this year... We finally got nice...

    Ducks ALIVE in 2025!

Sounds like a beautiful combination of flowers and color. I'm a big fan of the Gem series marigolds after trying so many kinds. They don't need to be deadheaded, they smell wonderful, have hundreds of little flowers and a nice and tidy mounded bush growth habit. Only thing is I've found the...
