I saw three rabbits today while out doing errands in my neighbourhood. Yikes. Hopefully the weasels, foxes and coyotes will balance things out.
This year I'm holding back on planting beans in pots until mid - May, given how cold it still is. Time to start getting some poles cut down. I'm...
Terribly cold today, and going well below freezing tonight. After a darn cold winter we're getting a darn cold spring. But there has been 3 very sunny warm days in the past 2 weeks which have felt like being slathered in honey. I got a tray of crucifers outside for a day in dappled shade, and...
It's impressive how a tuber like Jerusalem Artichoke can do so well under lights for such an extended period of time. I feel pretty confident now these will be just fine despite having to plant them so early. I guess they aren't really known for being finicky growers. 😂 They are at least a...
@hdan posting this for you. Noticed oedema in these seedlings a few days ago. You had posted some tomatoes with leaves that looked a bit like these, (these are tzimbalo plants). The table these are on is pretty high humidity, because I have lots of plant trays on there and they were all...
You planted 72 tomato seeds? That's a lot of tomatoes!
It's so fun though isn't it? Do you keep the dome lid underneath the cell tray with water in it always?
The forest has finally opened up. The snow & ice has pretty much melted, it's dry enough to be out walking around. I don't think I've ever felt so elated to be able to walk in the bush again, after nearly 6 very long months. I especially love the pine groves where the light is filtered and...
Yes, seems likely. As everyone knows Canada is having some pressure applied to it (for good reason) in regards to the border situation & narcotics; maybe this is heating up even in the mailroom. I read last week the #1 cause of death in my town (under 49) is overdose. Surprising to me...
About a month ago I got a surprising as well as depressing email. It was from a lady who had gotten seeds from me a couple years ago, and had really liked a freebie I had put in her package. She was so pleased to find such a uniquely good fresh bean variety, and on a guess I had made about...
And it's getting even stranger. These seedlings get more crumply dry, and unhappy, with each day. I need to do some research on this variety, I really may need to plant another batch of seeds in a week as the package instructed. Their prediction of 4 weeks being the height of misery in the...
This is a first & I'm super shocked. They actually opened my package. Thank goodness they still sent it along and I got it alright, but this is concerning. I'm not sure if this was just a random thing because the beans in here had some weight to them, or if this is the result of something...
We have about the same @jbrobin09 , but with typically quite heavy snow cover. That is quite demanding of the perennials I imagine. Both my kale and parsley plants magically survived this winter season, but once we had a few -20 nights with no snow, that was it for them.
Isn't Kelvedon Wonder such a fabulous pea? I just love it. I'm quite thrilled with Hurst Green Shaft as well. Although with all the magnificent diversity of peas you have in England, Kelvedon might fall lower on the spectrum of wonder than it would here with our scarcity of pea types.
Did the last thinning job, the tomatoes. Again, didn't seem like I planted that much, it was a lot of seedlings to cut. All adds up to a fair lot of seed waste, but it's done now. Spooky that thinning, on tomatoes that I know I have no more seeds for. Kept 2, and a few 3, where I really felt...
Carrot thinning is one of the worst types of thinning! You have to squat so low and the seedling are so very tiny. It's not like you can lift them onto your table, grab a chair and get comfortable doing it. My daughter is so 'over' thinning the carrots, her fave veg, that when she plants now...
