Funny you say that. This was my first year starting tomato seeds. They really haven't grown much since they sprouted their first set of leaves and they are yellowish. I have a VERY sunny window. I finally stuck them outside, but I will probably buy some plants from the nursery this week.
Yes- that's hyacinth bean. I grow them every year. They have pruple flowers and purple bean pods. I've heard mixed things about being able to eat them. I never have. They are very rewarding to grow as they germinate and grow quickly. I gather the pods and harvest the beans for planting the...
I usually plant a portion of each crop every two weeks. E.g., if you can plant tomatoes between May 1 and June 15, plant 1/4 of your seeds on May 1, 1/4 on May 15, 1/4 on June 1, and 1/4 on June 15.
Of course, don't plant the whole packet. Think of how many plants you might need to feed your...
This year's project was supposed to be to put in a corn patch. I want it to go into an area not worked before -- it's a weedy grass patch right now. Of course, the tiller was broken and I bought the part it needed. But dh hasn't had time to fix the tiller. I know how busy he has been and...
My peas, radishes, spinach, and lettuce have sprouted and I transplanted my leeks outside :)
No signs of my potatoes. I think I may write them off as a loss...

Some of my seedlings are getting big (squash and cukes). Do you think I can put them outside under a milk-jug cloche? It is still in the 30's at night. I was thinking of putting the cloche out for a few days to warm up the soil first.
Think it will work? How long should I leave the cloche...
The first year I broke ground on a garden, I immediately covered it with landscaping fabric to keep the weeds down. I was afraid I would have a massive growth of weeds before I ever had a chance to do anything with it. As I planted, I cut holes in the landscape fabric for the plants. As the...
My seedlings have been in toilet paper rolls for about 3 1/2 weeks. One roll unraveled on me, but the other 15 still seem sturdy. The roots of some are starting to grow out the bottoms. I'll keep you posted.

Yes - it's just that cheap plastic fencing from the local garden center. It has small holes about 1/2" in size. They can fly in if they want, but they have never done it.
