    Goin' to the Dogs!

Actually it's Mabel, from the French Ma Belle meaning my beautiful one. She *is* beautiful, but definitely CRAZY. Maybe cleats would have helped the situation, but I'm not going out into the polar winter with a drill and hardware, so too late now. She's never slipped or fallen on this ramp...

    Tomatoes for 2025

Probably its popularity is because it was developed in your country. I chose it because of how early it bears fruit, and with our short growing season this was a draw. These tomatoes were fine in salads, and made 4 big containers of spaghetti sauce, one eaten and the other three in the...

Yes I can relate. I'm also a long distance from veterinary and other necessities, about a half hour away, but I do have a car and can drive (even if no longer on super highways). Otherwise a taxi here would be equally exorbitant. Your cat looks like a gentle little soul and I hope the best...

She'd like best to live in a pack with 3 or 4 other dogs.

    Tomatoes for 2025

I am thinking of growing an heirloom tomato next summer, rather than the Arctic Plenty variety I grew this year. I think that now with my indoor grow light kit, if I start the plants early they might have a hope of ripening before frost. A short growing time was my main reason for planting...

It sounds like fluids would help him more than anything. That is something that a locum could easily do. I used to give sub-cutaneous fluids to my elderly cats whose kidneys were no longer working very well, and it helped them a great deal. Maybe you could take him for fluid treatment once or...

Government messing around with health care systems - we have the same sort of problems here, made worse by our for-profit health care structure.

I'm glad things are looking better for your cat. He looks very comfortable in that sunny window. I'm guessing that the locums in your country must be something like a physician's assistant or a veterinary technician here in the US, and both can do many of the things that a doctor or...

    Goin' to the Dogs!

It crossed my mind, believe me! LOL I don't think so, not in the sense of old age dementia. I had a collie who in his last year would walk into a corner and then be unable to figure out how to get out. I'd have to help him. But this isn't like that. I do think Mabel has mental/emotional...

    Goin' to the Dogs!

I was kidding. Mabel is not actually self-banished to the great outdoors but just to the confines of a large fenced in yard, with shelter freely available in a little den under the porch and above ground inside the enclosed back porch that leads to the kitchen, furnished with cushy dog beds...

Be careful. Medicare would never contact anyone by phone. If you have questions go to their actual website or call them using their official phone number or official website that is printed on their official literature or on your Medicare card. Never give out your SS or Medicare # over the...

    Goin' to the Dogs!

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's covered in in outdoor carpeting, aka astroturf, a comfortable non-slip surface. She and other dogs before her have used this same ramp for decades. She spent all day yesterday running in circles and barking to express her dislike of the new set-up. Finally...

    Goin' to the Dogs!

You're not wrong! The names I've been calling this animal, I can't print here. But when it comes down to it, she is her own worst enemy. Clearly I have to do something to save her life, so I've been reviewing my options. First would be to return the ramps to their summer configuration and...

    Your Weather, 2024

We had a surprise snowstorm on Thanksgiving. Heavy wet snow that caused a lot of power outages statewide. Fortunately most of it melted yesterday, and there are just a few inches remaining if that.

Well our old emergency fund was some years ago, and everything was less expensive back then. Still I think a savings account for the purpose is a better bet than insurance. Do you have a different vet you could take your kitty to? This one sounds like a corporate over-priced waste of your...

    Goin' to the Dogs!

OK Bay, you have a sheep with SMS (stupid mother syndrome) but I'll go you one better. I have a sheltie with SDS (stupid dog syndrome). To explain: These are 2 photos of the summer configuration of the ramps leading off the back porch. Each of these 4 ramp parts is approximately 12 inches...

I've never been big on pet health insurance. Even when we were living dollar-to-dollar I simply kept $1,000. on hand. That would've covered most vet emergency surgeries or other expenses, and we could have come up with the rest if treatment exceeded that one grand.
