    As long as the pots are big enough and have good drainage you should be fine. Try to pick up some good mulch or something to mix with the dirt you have. Some peat moss or at least some Miracle Gro potting soil. If you have a nursery close by you could probably get a couple bushels of good mulch...

    Cars have not used leaded gas since the 1970's . Depending on where you live I'd be more woried about road salt.

    If they are only 2 ft. wide I would say you should only plant 4 plants down the middle of each bed.

    carrots spinach herbs lettuce peas (now) beans beets All can be sown directly into the garden. I think you are about the same zone as me (5) so you can put your peas in anytime now and you can even try some lettuce, spinach and radishes.
