I lifted that photo from a website that sells that bean, can't remember the name of it, but I got lucky that they had a photo of a bed of them. Not a super common thing to see on a seed website! Well, it's good to know there won't be any surprises.
That's what I thought, one site says they're much like Jacob's Cattle. This is a picture of a field of them, so you may be right @Blue-Jay, these down look like 100% true bushes? What do you think?
I didn't realize that there were any bean seeds that look just like the Cave Bean in a bush habit, but the packet of UC Southwest Red is a bush. I only opened them tonight, that was surprising.
I learned something tonight about some beans that I've seen around, something I've always wondered. There's a company that sells Italian seeds, I've seen them all the years I've been gardening, quite common on the racks in spring. Many of them have 'marconi' in the name somewhere. That had me...
I'm pretty excited about the 2026 carrot line up! I ordered quite a lot of packets all of which came in this week, exciting stuff! I have quite a color selection, some repeats from last year that I loved and some all new ones. I read a really great review of 'Gniff' carrots by a seed saving...
Some new beans arrived this week, the runners are called Wynona’s Big Brown and the mixed ones are called Harvest Moon. I decided to try a few limas this year, the earliest varieties I could find.
Is Romaine your favorite lettuce @Alasgun? It's my #1 go to in the grocery store, but I don't think I've ever tried it in the garden. I was in my seed stash last night and noticed I have seeds for a red romaine.
Tomorrow it will actually rise above freezing to 2C/36F, hallelujah!! Feels like Christmas Eve tonight. I'm always grateful for spring, but this winter is a whole new level of anticipation. It's still going to drop back down Sat night to -34C/-29F, but I'll take what I can get in the...
I was once forced to grow beans under lights for 2 weeks due to a spell of unexpected bad weather. One time isn't much to draw a conclusion but what I observed with mine was the grow light fluorescents were not strong enough and the bean stems elongated far too much really quickly. I think if...
Attended my first agility class tonight (for dogs, not humans!) Wow, 2 hours long and it was a GREAT class! I learned so much. Watching how the different dogs react to each scary obstacle and the proper way to respond. The whole thing really is reinforcement + deterrence. Of course...
I have honestly never understood that human desire for high risk speed. I'm all about self preservation, lol. I appreciate the graceful moves of the professional down hill skier - but from a chair indoors. And with dogs it's like you're combining a predator mindset and speed, a rabbit appears...
Yes, I got this one from Metchosin. I wish there was a little more info about it, I might write to them and ask when I get some time.

I guess you really do live in a climate that is considerably warmer than mine @Blue-Jay, to get the tan coloring. Mine were so blue, but Bela is a later maturing bean and we were getting cooler weather for sure in September. Illinois is probably still quite hot at that time. I sent a couple...
I took a class on this sport and knew it wasn't for me, mega speed and big trees seems a bad mix to me. Lol Maybe skijoring, but not the sled. But this is my trainer, I'm shocked the dogs didn't just keep going 🤣 🤣 🤣 darn Eurohounds
I have thought a great deal about this topic, for both plants and animals.
With the animals, and I think of dogs when I say this, the current estimate is between 15,000 - 40, 000 years worth of selective breeding. There's a lot to appreciate, and marvel at, with what we've achieved in terms...
I grew Badda Nera last year too @Blue-Jay and had the same results, poor. It was also really, really late. Way too late for my climate but like your plants, my vines were huge, vigorous and healthy. Just not much seeds. I'm letting it go for that reason.
