Could you have too much peat moss? Sometimes 'compost' is a mix of peat moss and compost.

Lots and lots of water and composted manure. Mulch the soil to keep it moist. They need hot weather and water. Good luck!

This is its third year. It had one plum last year, but it was on the trunk (strange!) and I knocked it off accidently when it was green.

They are super easy and cheap to make. I bought 3/4 inch electrical conduit, a pipe bender and 3/4 " connectors. Depending on how tall you want your trellis to be - you cut the conduit into 3 sections. They come in 10 foot lengths, so you might have to use 3 pipes to make 2 trellises...
