Ok I built my garden box yesterday.Filled it with rabbit poo,soil,and worms/worm poo. I planted round zukes,swiss chard,daikon radish,beets,ground cherries,turnips..and I think that is it.

For those who have built raised wooden beds what screws did you use? Decking,galvanized,or dry wall? I got expensive 3 inch deck screws,and saw where some people used dry wall. My wood is untreated fir or pine 2 x 10 x 8 cut in half to make a 4x4 box. I know cedar or redwoods last longer,but...

I have read apple trees to be planted in spring and fall. Not sure on the veggie.You would need to look that one up,but I am guessing it needs a longer season as compared with zuchini.

Look into beneficial insects if you want to avoid chemicals. Sticky tapes(yellow and red papers) also help. Some plants deter pests. Neem oil can also be useful.

I have used straw. Also in place of the newspaper I have used pizza boxes with wood chips over them. I got the wood one time free from a tree company.

You could try shading them a bit,and see if they keep growing.

Well I checked my asparagus,and instead of the plants I found a nest of baby meadow voles(and momma).Guess they ate my plants.

I need to go check mine in the front yard. Hope the rabbits don't eat it! Sweet set up with the boxes.I need to do that in the back yard. What size lumber did you use? I never made raised beds. Iit would be so much nicer,and way easier to control the grass/weeds.

Yes they will take over.My coco mint was growing in the grass.Same with the spearmint. It DID smell nice when I cut the lawn,but it will crowd out other plants. I would do pots or a seperate mint flower bed.

I ended up getting the cart,and go figure Home depot had a similar one for $5 less. Oh well. I have added some metal washers to the plastic where the pipe goes in for the wheels. Hopefully this will help hold things together longer.

If it is warm enough I would place it outside for sun and water as usual. Some plants I thought were dead sprouted growth after placing it outside. If you were going to prune you could cut off a little bit to see if there is some life in it.

Thanks for the posts! Dh's truck (OTR DRIVER) has been in the shop much of the week,so I really shouldn't be spending money. They only get one shipment a year though,and the plants go so fast.

Zuchinini type plants always produced very well for me with little care. I throw seeds all over the yard,and don't always get to watering them. Chives grow well too. I think you would enjoy tomatillos and ground cherries. I don't have great soil so when I plant something(seed or transplant)...
