I prefer the ground. I would go broke trying to deal with bins. I think many bins are counterproductive. A good bin lets the compost come in direct contact with the ground and all the beneficial organisms and worms it has to offer imo.

The area gets filtered sunlight 1/2 the day and full maybe 1/3.

Will asparagus tolerate shade in 7b? I have the perfect trench already existing but it gets sun only a fraction of the day.

I would not hesitate to compost it.

Keep it trimmed close to the ground. It will eventually die.

What I don't get about the sq. foot gardening is the site says it lowers your water usage. My experiences with raised beds is it takes more watering. The more I look at sq. foot gardening the more I want to try it though.

I have been having problems with fire ants getting in my worm bins. After the last mass loss I have decided when I go fishing I will just dig the naturally occurring worms in my compost piles when I want to go fishing.

I have a crossbow but I can only eat so many deer and enough are usually given to me. I hate to say it but two less deer will bother my garden. A pregnant doe got run over today.:(

I don't know if it helps for other pests. It can slow deer down because they would rather eat in cover than out in the open. If your garden buts right up to the woods all bets are off.

Just a thought. Ever think about building a grenhouse above a hog pen? They put off alot of body heat. The manure puts off heat too I guess. My grandma used to have a hog pen under an oak tree. It kept its leaves all winter.

I would maybe try a better brand stihl and husqavarna are good. They can be costly but they are worth it. Your chainsaw may just need a carb adjustment. If you do get a new saw make sure its over 40 cc and does not have a catylitic converter. All small ones have cats and it really weakens them down.

Raised beds work well but take more water. With the water restrictions and drought here I need to install a pump on my well before I use them.
