My two cents is as diverse a material as you have available. And then grow mulch plants as well. 'Weeds' make great mulch plants, but I like to know a little something about the plant. It might be beneficial. Where in NE are you?

I actually agree with this. But I think those with perennial production would be sitting in a more comfortable seat than annual gardeners. It is just more stable in my opinion.
