Hi! I found this place through BYC also. I'm glad you joined us! I'm not from Cal. but from Alabama. I just wanted to tell you welcome. There are alot of us that garden and raise chickens...it just feels nice to gather eggs and fresh veggies from the garden and finish up with a small bouque...

I'm not ready but you sure are making me want to get that way!!! The hubby is tilling the soil next week to get those English peas in the ground. Also we will be planting some Irish Potatoes. That should get me motavated to get my act together! :D

Not a dumb question, but I'll give you a honest answer. I plant huge gardens, (feel free to look at my veg. garden page on "view personal page") and we plow the soil well before planting, let everything sprout, and plow again and even a third time. That gets rid of a ton of grass and weeds so...

I grow a field of wheat for the chicks/deer in the winter time. But you can do the same thing for them in containers. I see them at Petsmart all the time. Beware...those chicken will mow it to nothing pretty quick. Break the tops of the sprouts off when they get a 3-4 inches about soil...

When it was scarified were you able to see the creamy colored inside? That just speeds the process. If it is lumpy...that is a good sign that it is about to sprout. I'm sure you have done your homework...but maybe this link will help you along...
