At least in WA, when we have a big pine tree stump we want to get rid of... we get a good long wood bit, and drill a few hundred holes into the top of the stump. Rain water fils up the stumps, bugs show up, and the stump gets soggy and rotten in a few years.

At least you can grow them. LOL From about 40 tomato plants last year, a cooler than usual summer, we got all of about 4 lbs of tomatos, all cherry ones. Not kidding. I only expect 2 buttercup squash to mature per plant, so... yeah... 12 does not seem unreasonable. LOL

Yeah, depends on where you are, variety, and competition. I sell gold nugget, early girl, beaver lodge and sweetie tomato starts from 1-2 each, in a 9 or 18 ounce drinking cup respectively.

Interesting, how many months were the plants alive? In the potted ones on my balcony, I just use pure miracle grow soil that was already used once from seed starting/left overs. They usually start to set flowers at about 2 months old or so. If the soil is too rich, they might not want to set...

Did they have flowers? If they never even set flowers....too much fertilizer perhaps? Some don't do very well in pots. Try a cherry type tomato.

Some tomatoes do better in buckets than others. I find the small cherries do great in a bucket, while the larger things like early girl don't like the restriction.

No, I live in one of the developments near the edge of town. It's a small town here, so the commute is just 3 miles. Family housing does still have plots for rent though. It may be cheap, but it is also really noisy as one of my co workers who lives there tells me. Did you go to OSU?
