    Newspaper will stop weeds from popping up from underneath. They will also hold moisture. Newspaper, leaves, compost then a layer of topsoil will make a great planting bed

    How big is your garden?

    I do "square foot gardening" in raised beds. Like others here my soil is hard packed red clay. After a year of severe drought, it's more like red rock!! My garden is only 8ft x12 ft but in that are I have tomatoes, greenbean, lima beans, squashes, lots and lots of peppers, gourds. Strawberries...

    Butterfly bushes from seed?

    Just kind of press the seed to the soil and mist them. Otherwise, they just wash away. I've grown lots by seed. Just keep the damp and they will grow like weeds
