I was thinking, instead of having my vegetable garden in rows to orient it like this instead:
With a different vegetable in each block. Would that work alright?
I would like to recommend the book The Backyard Homestead by Carleen Madigan. It is made up of different books by Storey Publishing edited into one convenient, one stop guide. It has a very nice gardening section, a section on fruit and nut trees, and an animal section with instructions on...
I am beginning to get ready to mail order seeds. I requested catalogs, but, I would like to know:
Are there any seed companies that you would definitely recommend?
Are there any seed companies that I should stay away from?
Are there any specific Seed varieties that you would recommend?
I have persimmon seeds available, if you have never had a persimmon, you should really try one. They have a great fruity almost citrus like taste when ripe. I can send up to 4 lots of 5 seeds per lot. Usually I would have more, but the animals got most of the persimmons this year.
This is the...
I got both of these for $8 total. They seem a little battered, but they seem healthy, and should do fine once I get them planted.
See if you can guess what they are.
Tonight it is supposed to get down to 24-29 degrees. (Yes, for you southerners, that is degrees Fahrenheit ;) ) The Home Depot here has started their 75% off sale. They have nice plants for very reasonable prices, well developed trees and berry bushes will only be $3-4 with this sale. I was...
I have a black walnut tree in my yard, and I would like to try to propagate more trees from the seeds. Does anyone have an idea of how to do this? Do I need to cold stratify them first?
Would it be possible to start flowers now, so that they could be in bloom next spring? I would like to try Purple Coneflower, and a couple varieties of Daisy. Do you think if I started the plants inside now, and then got the small plants in the ground before fall they would be alright?
Thanks!
I bought some Burpee seeds for those Giant Pumpkins and planted some of them. I now have two good healthy plants growing next to each other. I am planning on cutting the smaller one out. I planted them in compost, and I have been builing up a small mound of compost, banana peels, and grass...
It was growing in one of the flower beds, I know it is some kind of squash thing (cucumber, zucchini, pumpkin) but I don't know which one.
I transplanted it into the garden, but it would help if I knew where to put it.
I went to the store and bought some bush beans to replace my carrots, and some pole beans to grow along the fence. Both of the bean packs were labeled "Garden Bean" is this just something fancy to call regular old beans?
I also bought some seeds for "Silver Line Melon" I've never heard of it...
... With carrots.
The carrots grow so slowly and stay so low to the ground that they are getting over taken by weeds.
I think I will put bush beans in their place. Do you have a recommended variety?
Has anyone tried this, or, have information on it?
The example that I read was Corn being planted, with peas being planted right next to each stalk so they could grow up it, with pumpkins planted at the base to keep the weeds down.
I have corn in now and I was thinking of atleast trying the...
