When I planted it I used a bunch of manure mixed with the soil. Then I used Fox Farm's liquid fertilizer called "Grow Big". I also used some fish emulsion stuff that smells terrible. I didn't really use any fertilizer once the pumpkin set because I was afraid of using too much nitrogen.
Thanks everyone. It was really fun. Maybe I should have waited to post until the 15th but I was just so excited that I actually grew something. I can't wait til next year now.
I'm sorry Mary. I don't have enough space at my house either. I'm lucky enough that my mom does and she let me use her space.
I was just curious about what happened with everyone else who entered the contest.
That was a little to easy. Where was everyone? There's a whole bunch of people that didn't post anything. It doesn't really feel like I won anything. I don't want that to sound rude at all because I know many of you had bad luck and couldn't help it. I think I had a good dose of beginners luck...
Here is my pumpkin! It weighed in at 83 lbs.! I was very excited. I tried to measure it but my measuring tape only goes to 60 in. That's my husband in the last picture.
I was just wondering how everyone's doing with their pumpkins. I have one that's growing pretty well. I tried to measure it around but I can't get underneath it. So I measured as far as I could and it's at 38 inches. I'm so excited to see how big I can get this. Here is a picture.:D
So how...
My progress so far has been pretty slow. My giant pumpkin plant is HUGE but still hasn't set a pumpkin. There are plenty of female and male flowers so I'm just waiting for one of them to start growning. I have a sugar pie that's doing really well in comparison. I thought it would be really funny...
I've done a lot of research on that this year. I was going for the single stem method. I tried to make sure I took all the suckers off and have one main vine. I wasn't quite as diligent as I should have been so a couple of my plants now have two big vines. I think that it has worked very well...
I'm hoping to be able to start with a few varieties and be able to keep growing them without buying new seed every year. It's so self sufficient. Then maybe I can trade with others in the future to get new varieties.
I found the farmers market coming up on Thursday and supposedly there's a...
Now that you mention a festival I remembered that there is an elephant garlic festival near here. It's in North Plains, which is about a 45 min. drive from me. I recently read that elephant garlic is not actually a garlic but is part of the leek family. I thought that was pretty interesting...
I think I need to do some serious research. I had no idea how much I didn't know about garlic! I think that I might read that book Bill. I only garden in raised beds so I'm thinking that I may have pretty good luck as far as drainage is concerned. Things do get pretty soggy here sometimes so I'm...
Thank you for the tips.
Do you have any idea what type would be best grown in my area? We have very wet winters but they are fairly mild in temperature. I want some that I can harvest fairly early. I'm just starting to learn the difference between hardneck and softneck. I didn't know there was...
I never even thought about EBay. Thanks for the idea. I'm going to check that out.
They aren't actually going to ship the garlic until September but I kept reading "order now so you get what you want". Maybe I jumped the gun but I'm glad I found what I wanted.
I've had one cherry tomato ripen but the rest of my tomatoes are totally green, not even a hint of pink. Hopefully that will change soon. I feel very fortunate to live in an area where vegetables are pretty easy to grow even with a short growing season. Way to persevere though ChemGirl.
