Not a good year for vegetable gardening

I am in Lakewood. Our garden is so far behind schedule this year with this crazy weather! I am still putting out more plants though. Let's hope for a long Fall.

Not a good year for vegetable gardening

The weather here in CO has certainly been crazy, hasn't it? I don't remember ever seeing a June like this before.

    Compost Safety?

Thanks, Pat. I think I will keep what I have in my planters and maybe add some different mix to the top. I'm sure it will be fine, although it irritates me that they sent me this. At least the new planters look great!

    Compost Safety?

Oh God, it is so sad. :( I am a student, so I can't afford more soil let alone all the work it is going to take to remove this stuff and replace it. I just found out I am not getting my new birds either (seller can't fill the order). So, this is my first summer in three years that I have any...

    Compost Safety?

Thanks, Hattie. How long do they need to be covered though? I had thought about maybe trying some of that black plastic sheeting and using it around the plants so that maybe it heats up the soil, but I can hopefully still plant.

    Compost Safety?

The really frustrating thing is that we already put it in our raised planters! Doh! :(

    Compost Safety?

LOL, I missed that the first time I read the post. LOL.. So, I don't have to be worried about potential bacteria or anything infecting my veggies and making us sick from the compost?

    Compost Safety?

Hi Andy- Yeah, that is something I forgot to mention. It is sprouting seeds. I had it under plastic tarps for about a week and when I uncovered it, there were seeds sprouted in it. Some of them were sprouted surprisingly deep down into the pile too.

    Compost Safety?

Hey Everyone! I have finally finished my raised planters and filled them with a planter's mix I ordered. The mix is supposed to be top soil, decomposed wood, and dairy compost. Is there a concern with using compost that has not fully decomposed? I ask because I have found various things in...

    My Head is Spinning!

Thank you all. I am going to try to set up a compost area at my new place. I just don't have time to do it for this year. I would much rather know exactly what is in the compost I use than to buy it somewhere. As far as mulch, I would like to try coconut coir. It is just so expensive. That...

    My Head is Spinning!

Who knew gardening can be so complicated and confusing! LOL, I have gardened for awhile now, but I am trying to be much more conscious about the products I am using these days. It is all so complicated! Right now, I am trying to decide what to do for a growing medium and mulch. I had picked...

    It said family sooooo...

Well, it sounds like you are super busy. I can totally relate! I feel like I never have free time to get anything done, LOL. I love staying busy though, so I guess it is all good. :)

    Thinning Started Plants- Especially Lettuce

Wow! Thanks for all of the great info! I think I will try a combination of all that. I am transplanting them outside. I might try transplanting some that I thin off the main pods into a different container to see if they grow. The rest I may just try thinning some and leaving some as is.

    Thinning Started Plants- Especially Lettuce

Hey Y'all, I have another question I am having problems finding a definitive answer to. I have started several plants including several lettuces. I started them in an Aerogarden seed tray. The directions said to start six seeds per hole and then thin the plants down to the strongest. The...

    Got My New Brackets!

Thank you! I feel like the project is taking forever to get off the ground. Whenever we think we are going to have time to get the remaining things we need, something comes up. Such is life, LOL. :)

    Got My New Brackets!

You know, the one thing I worry about is whether these will be strong enough to hold the boards together on their own. I think I may still have to do some interior supports so the beds stay together and also don't bow.

    Got My New Brackets!

I am so excited! I got my new corner brackets for the raised veggie beds I am building. These things are awesome! They are very heavy duty, powder coated steel. I will have to post pictures once I get the beds built. Right now, I love the brackets. If that changes once I use them, I will...

    Plastic Ling and Sealing Beds

Argh! I just realized I typed "ling" instead or "lining". That's what I get for being so excited to get out and start building.... Thank you, Pat! I think I may use some sort of lining on the front part that is on the patio and then just landscape fabric or nothing at all on the yard side...

    Plastic Ling and Sealing Beds

Hey Everyone, I have a few more questions about my new raised beds and my brain is on overload after skimming through the archives. LOL We are building the beds around a brick patio. A few inches of the bed(s) is going to rest on the patio and the remainder of the bed will extend into the...

    Hydroponics medium?

I have used hydroton. I love the look of it. I would think you might need as much help with filtration though as you can get since ducks poop so much.
