Organic bug prevention for apple and peach trees?

Thanks, y'all! I will look for Neem oil and dormant oil. I'm not sure that bagging the fruit will work (as that is a LOT of bags!). :) I'm assuming it is too later to spray this year. All four trees have fruit on them. Hopefully the bugs will stay away for the time being.

Organic bug prevention for apple and peach trees?

I just planted two apple and two peach trees in my yard. Everybody tells me that I need to spray them regularly to keep the bugs and worms out of the fruit. I don't particularly want to spray a lot of chemicals around the trees as they are near my chicken coops. Any thoughts on how to keep...

When do the ssed catelogs come in?

Thanks, Vfem! I've ordered from Gurney's but never used Parks. I've loved flipping through the Parks catalog though.

    Wasp bites....what do you use?

Be careful with multiple stings. The first one is okay, but sometimes future bites get progressively worse. Watch the swollen area carefully to make sure the swelling isn't spreading. Later bites can trigger an allergic reaction. I too had multiple run-ins with wasps this summer. I found...

When do the ssed catelogs come in?

I got my Parks last week and my Shumway today. I have never ordered from either. Has anyone experience with these companies? I've found all sorts of stuff I love in the Parks! I haven't looked through the Shumways yet, but I'm sure I'll want everything! :)

    cosmos

Be aware that cosmos will reseed like crazy if left to run amuck. I planted a couple of packs last year and they not only grew back this year, they pretty much took over the front yard. I pulled them all out in late August and they all grew back again. I got TWO crops of them this year, all...

    annihilating the grass

Hmmm, so I should give up and just live with the grass? No salting. I don't want to screw up my neighbor's pasture next door. I do drive over it, just not on the edges so much. The center is nice and compact and grass free. After spending all the repair/remodel budget on a new hot water...

    annihilating the grass

Is there a way to permanently kill grass in an area? I am getting ready to put gravel down on my driveway and I'm tired of spraying weed killer. I've heard that salt water will do the trick, but how much salt, etc is needed to do the job? thanks, CG

Only if you add some blue into the mix too... :)

    RED Trumpet Vine seeds

I'm with Beefy. I have wild orange trumpet vine growing on an old dead tree. The pods are too high for me to reach before they split and dump seeds. I spend most of my summer digging the runners out of my flower beds and gravel driveway. Be careful and only put this where you REALLY want it...

Does anyone have egg gourd seeds? or know where I can get some?

My local co-op had egg gourd seeds when I was there last. Do you have a co-op nearby? Mine always has interesting things.

What is on the list for spring?

My Mr Stripey grew like crazy at the end of last summer. It was a great tomato plant. I just don't like to eat tomatoes. I gave them all away. I consider it to be a form of community service. :P Everybody else likes to eat them and I love to grow them. They just smell right for summer...

It's hard to resist them though, isn't it? :)

The roses are here! The roses are here!

I swung by the co-op this past week and they had a greenhouse FULL of the new Jackson & Perkins roses for this season. I walked through the hundreds of little stumpy plants making notes. "I want this one and this one and this one..." It's true. I want them ALL. I've been comparing notes with...

    Underplantings

Hmmm... I'm in middle TN. I'll need to do a little study to see if it acts like kudzu here or not. It has been warmish on and off here for the last few weeks. I've started weeding around the roses- mainly pulling up burmuda runners. I hate those things!!!! Probably this summer I need to lay...

What is on the list for spring?

I'm planting mostly odd things this year. Tomatoes- Tommy Toes and Mr. Stripey (only odd because I don't eat tomatoes. I just really like watching them grow and how they smell hot on the vine. Weird, I know.) Strawberries- okay... not odd either. I'm on year two of bare root plants...

    It's that time. . .

I've decided to plant only weird stuff this year. :D I found red cucumbers and mini watermelons on Amazon.com I want to plant loofah and swan neck gourds too. I'll plant tomatoes and butterbeans and purple snap beans, of course. I have second year strawberries that should come along...

    rabbits! - UPDATE: Ha!

The dang bunnies around here like to sashay around the backyard fence taunting the dogs. I swear the little suckers will get within about five feet of the maniacally barking dogs and mock them with a switch of their little fluffy tails. "LaLaLa, you can't get me... I'm going to munch away out...

    Underplantings

Yeah, I actually spent much of my free time last fall laying down layers of newspaper and/or weed cloth and then dumping pine mulch over that. I got 3/4 of the front flower garden done before it got cold. I'll tackle the veggie garden when it warms back up again. The problem is that I am one...
