    How large should I let the leaves get before harvesting? I've been picking them when they're about 6-8 inches long. Should I let them get any bigger? :) Susan

    Pea Pods!

    Our stupid resident groundhog has eaten our pea plants to the ground for the second time, despite having an electric fence wire surrounding them! I guess no peas for me this year. We are definitely building an enclosure around our garden before next spring!

    Green beans~has anyone ever heard of pickling?

    My mother always pickled green beans in a huge crock in the basement. She also pickled corn, sauerkraut and pig's feet. Very German, we are! :tools

    Japanese beetles on roses

    I've been picking them off for the last few years and it does seem that they're getting less each summer. I usually knock them into a container that has soapy water, but I guess if I'm going to get chicks in a few weeks, I'll have to come up with another method so I can feed them to the chicks.
