My HUGE artichoke plant is infested...

Thanks Steve... I think one thing I'll probably do first is to trim the older foliage off the lower parts of this bush.. it's got a TON of leaves and I think thinning it out would be a good first step. I'll try to get some additional photos in the next day or so.

My HUGE artichoke plant is infested...

Hi all... it's been a while since I've been on here but thought about you all when I was checking my artichoke bush yesterday.. This is a recent infestation and flies were buzzing around it (an unusual number) and when I felt some of the leaves and they were sticky.. This bush is close to 5'...

Raised beds for my front yard planter next to driveway...

thanks.. In my case the concrete blocks would be below the surrounding chips and whatnot -- I do not want them visible at all. As for hitting a car door with them, none of them -- I will probably do a single rectangular shaped planter in the center of the "plot" so any car door would be several...

Raised beds for my front yard planter next to driveway...

Thanks.. I hadn't thought of that actually.. I don't think SCE would like me painting their man hole cover.. lol.. It says on top -- high voltage and whatnot..

Raised beds for my front yard planter next to driveway...

hey all.. so I started yet another task in my yard.. I started digging up this one plot of dirt that is on the left side of my driveway.. since it’s where all of my utilities come in I had to get the lines mapped by calling 811 so they could map their respective lines. Gas, electric, cable...

    Difficult soil.. prep?

If I remember, I will snap a few pictures and post them here later. I don’t think they will be up before probably April sometime… They actually have a preserve out here for just the poppies. it’s quite spectacular in the right year

    Difficult soil.. prep?

thanks.. I agree its nice to see the rain -- we had some nice lightning and thunder about a day ago.. Nice to hear that -- love that stuff! Our CA wild poppies ought to be quite the sight this year with all this rain! Luckily for me its only about a 20 minute drive from my place..

    Difficult soil.. prep?

On a side note, we got a LOT of rain last night and I had dug some of my holes out a bit more a few days ago.. This is what I found this AM -- obviously the drainage rates are different between these two holes that are about 5-6 feet apart. If you have any ideas on what the scum is on top of the...

    Difficult soil.. prep?

I may have to see what extensions are around here.. I know in general I can grow pretty much whatever can be grown in Arizona in large part -- but have to be careful for cold stuff as we do get down to the mid 20's here in the winter. I do know enough now that blackberries while they can live...

    Difficult soil.. prep?

I don't know yet.. I think the two holes are about 5-6' apart and if I can make an oblong planter encompassing the two holes and put veggies in the middle -- but I'd love to have the planter to a height of perhaps 3'.. Perhaps the first year I'll opt to not have any trees but to just have...

    Difficult soil.. prep?

I should state that I might opt to build a cinder block planter around these holes to raise the trees off the ground a bit -- or perhaps I'll just do something seasonal for now till I know what I want to do with these guys.. thoughts would be, obviously, greatly appreciated!

    Difficult soil.. prep?

Ok.. So it's been almost a year since I started this thread. We've had a good amount of rain this winter so far (5.6") considering I'm in the high desert on the edge of Los Angeles county. Anyway, I never bothered to fill in these two holes -- they were left open for all these months...

    Keep or ditch?

Thanks! With that note I might just proceed to dig them up and prepare for other plants.. Thanks much!!

    Keep or ditch?

I'm in the desert and it, at the peak, runs for about 3 months with helps in the mid to upper 90's and within that 3 month period about a month to 2 months its over 100F.. The plants have a shade cloth protecting them but it just gets darned hot here. If these aren't going to do well I'd just...

    Keep or ditch?

Hi all.. So.. My blackberries, which I've asked here about in the past, are up on the discussion list today. I'm wondering if my overhead watering (via mini drip sprinklers) is the cause of what you see in the pics below. The plants are dying except for those areas not touched by the water...

    Rose pest identification...

Whats the best solution for powdery mildew? I've tried personally various sprays on plants to get rid of pests but the toll they take on the plants is almost worse than the infestation itself and in some cases kills the plants completely. I lost a raspberry that way recently..
