Wait until very ripe, then scoop the insides (including seeds) into a pitcher. Add ice cold water and sugar to taste for juice. Even just 2 or 3 ripe ones makes a great pitcher of juice. The juice is rumored to have a calming effect and many latin people I know drink it before bedtime and give...
Thank you, Stubborn. I'm also excited about my son getting to spend time with that side of his family. It's a much simpler life and I'm looking forward to raising him without such an expectation of having "things". Even now at 5, he thinks he's needs every toy that he sees a commercial for!
Thanks so much, guys. It is a big scary move. Particularly because of the region. People's eyes light up when I say Brazil-then I have to clarify that it is not the beaches of Rio. Where I'm going is a notoriously poor region at the edge (or actually cut out) of the Amazon. Living in this zone...
Thanks!
I am familiar with merlitons-I've heard them called chayote! I've never actually eaten one, though!
You're right-pineapple, mango, and avocado are also big there.
When I've been there, vegetables are not terribly popular at all. It's a rice/bean/meat diet.
I have only ever seen one...
My husband and I have decided to move to his hometown in Para, Brazil. (Specifically the town of Rio Maria). We should be there by the end of the year. For the first time since the age of 15, I will not work. Thus, I thoroughly plan to take advantage of my new loves of gardening and photography...
Cute! We have a lop bunny. In fact, my husband built a "run" right inside our garden so he gets all the weeds and scraps. If you work it out right, you could collect the droppings from under the cage as fertilizer and put it right in your garden!
LOL..I don't know about a reenactment.
Believe it or not, I've never had a mouse problem. I do have a cat who catches plenty of moles, though. I don't even have a barn-we just sit on 1 acre in a semi-rural area. And like I say, I don't normally have a problem with snakes, but I do have a...
I think I'll leave it be with the chicken wire and just see if maybe this is a rare occasion. We've had the chickens there for more than a year, so hopefully it won't happen often enough for me to justify changing the coop around!
I have dogs that have done a good job keeping racoons away and...
This morning as we were getting ready to leave for work we discovered a large black snake in the chicken coop!! I had 14 four week old pullets in there and the snake had eaten 3 and couldn't fit back through the chicken wire!
I don't have any problem with snakes hanging around until they start...
What the heck!!!! These pictures are like something out of Better Homes..What an eye you must have..Even the chicken coop looks beautiful! And you're beautiful!
I'm not sure this is completely fair!
I just found them in the hundreds in my roses. I have never had them before, but smashed most of them. This weekend I bought a trap at Lowe's. It is essentially a slick sided plastic bag with a lure that smells like Japanese beetle sexiness.
I had caught several within the first hour!
If it isn't just the bottom leaves turning yellow, but some of your stronger ones, this was the first sign of squash bugs for me. Maybe water the plant and inspect closely?
Unfortunately no! But he has gotten 4, and believe it or not, we haven't seen any more. Since he's anxious for garage sale money, though, he looks for them every afternoon.
You can certainly tell as soon as they are on the plant, though, because it goes downhill very quickly!
Kassaundra, you were absolutely right. In watering tomatoes this morning, I found them there, too! I took my 5 year old son to show him which ones I wanted gone and then offered a quarter for each body. We'll see how that goes.....
Oh, your son is just so handsome on her. He looks so comfortable! What a great experience he'll have with a foal! I guess the breed is anyone's guess, right?
Kassaundra, I planted these away from my garden in a weedy spot, so I didn't keep a good eye on them. Since the plants are dying anyhow, what kind of chemical can I use? I initially sprayed them with Sevin and it didn't even begin to deter them.
For the next crop, I'll be planting them in my...
