Steve,
Do you think having the tires 4 tires high was too high? There were lots of leaves and very long stems and then the potatoes in just the bottom couple of tires?
Do you know why I didn't have very many potatoes?

My vines died so we took the tires off and hardly no potatoes. I used dirt for the first tire for most of them and then used hay to fill the rest of the tires up. There were a couple I used dirt up past the 2nd tire and there were more potatoes under them. I am very disappointed.
I wonder...
They are not in my garden but under anything laying on top of dirt and invading the outside of my house. They are slipping through the cracks. hundreds and hundreds of them. A horror movie could be made out of the amount of these things. I have cedar siding but my neighbors little house is...
I planted some sprout potatoes from the store in a large planter in Feb and moved it outside and put tires over them and continued to build up the soil. The vine started turning yellow a little so I dug those up. I think I should have left them for a few more weeks until the vine died...
Mine have started flowering. Mine are in tires and I hope they turn out well because I ended up having to add more hay than dirt. I have some really pretty vines.
So it is about 2 weeks after the blooms fall of when it's time to harvest?

I love talking with elderly people who use to garden because they are full of so much wisdom. This couple that I visit with never bought commercial stuff for their garden.

I didn't know if any of you knew that egg shells are wonderful fertilizer. I put some in the hole before I planted my tomatoes and they have grown and are so pretty. A 90 year old man told me about this and he use to grow 3 lb tomatoes. So far it's working great!
I just thought I would pass...
Thank you so much for posting this!! I have seeds in water and was thinking about throwing them out but I will continue to watch for them to pipped. I'm good at waiting for pipping. 2 incubators going.

My neighbor thought I was crazy when I planted in tires but then he saw my vines he made a cylinder object out of an old pool side and planted him some potatoes!
Now my parents planted potatoes twice a year. The first plant was always March 17 unless it was on a Sunday then it was the day...
I'm lucky that our ground is sand and rocks so it drains well but still with all this rain the weeds are taking over. The tomato plants I had gotten planted are about 3 ft tall now.
Thank goodness a week without rain this week.

I have planted potatoes in 15 tires back in the middle of March. I have some that are 5 tires high. All the rain we've gotten I didn't get to add dirt like I wanted to but I did add hay. So I don't now how they are going to do but I have beautiful vines. I also planted some on the grown and...
This is where I am so confused is I've read the green needs the sun but then I've heard if there are more than 3 leaves it will not produce. So I cover up with hay and then the next day I will take the hay out so it can get sunshine and then I go back and cover.
We have been getting a lot of...
I didn't know if it would work to transplant them deeper into the dirt. I remembered planting tomatoes as a kid that my mom had started from seeds and she would make us plant them deep enough so only the leaves were showing. My mom always put up 100 quarts of tomato juice a year so she did...
Welcome to a great website with some great people.
I planted my tomatoes back in the first of Feb and I am still babying them. I have transplanted them several times to plant deeper in cups and they are finally getting strong.
Have fun and if something doesn't work out than you will learn...
