    Projected first frost date?

Wow! Ours in Northern Wisconsin is Sept. 15, but we had a frost on Aug. 26 and again last week. This after a short, cool summer. Only one batch of tomatoes in the canner this year... :(

Can I use dry dill, if I run out of fresh?

You can use dry dill, either the weed or the seed. You may end up with a cloudy, but still edible, product. In one recipe I have for fresh pack/quick process dills (from the U of WI Extension) it says that you can sub 1 Tbsp dry dill (weed or seed) for each 1- 11/2 head of dill in each pint...

    New... Have Tater Beetles :-(

I've hand-picked before--actually hand-knocked--them into a container of soapy water. Be sure to crush the eggs that they lay on the underside of the leaves :P (one of the few times I wear gloves in the garden!!). I hope my chickies like them; the chicks are teens and our weather has been so...

Square foot gardening...has anyone used this method??

I just stumbled on this thread and know that it's past the zucchini part, but if someone does want to plant vining zukes, zucchini rampicante is a vining zuke--and it can get 10'+ high! It is a great veg; it doesn't get soft and turn to mush when cooked like the regular stuff. And you can...

    I'm sooo frustrated! **Update**

Thanks for the cardboard box idea, Pat. We have a bunch of moving boxes left over from our fall move and the old-timers here say that they have never seen a summer without a chance of frost- every day it is a possibility. Friends up the road do not put their toms in until the middle of June...

    root cellar help, long

Have you checked out the Bubel book, "Rootcellaring"? It's a great book and it has many examples of all different kinds of rootcellars and how to make them. They even suggest which varieties of fruits and veggies make the best keepers. I checked it out from our interlibrary loan program--and...

    Help With Canning Basics?

The best basic how-to is The Ball Blue book. It has all the instructions (with pictures!) and many recipes. You can usually find this in the canning section of most hardware and big box (WM-type) stores. Thrift stores are a good place to find jars-check for cracks and chips; otherwise you can...

    How to germinate seeds indoors:

Many seeds do not require light to germinate, only heat; in order to get the heat without turning on an extra light, I set my trays on top of the fridge-usually plenty of extra heat up there. I move them once I see signs of life.

    Wisconsin

I'm in Butternut, about 1 hour south of Lake Superior. We are fairly overwhelmed with wet, heavy snow--DH is out pushing the 2'+ drifts around so we can get the car out eventually! Spring will come, spring will come...

    Welcome To TheEasyGarden Forum!

Well, I finally crossed over from BYC--guess I figured that 1 addictive forum wasn't enough!:P And I'm getting very antsy waiting to get into the dirt...as I watch a blizzard (no exaggeration!) kick up outside:mad:. I keep chanting "Spring will come, spring will come..."

I am so jealous! Our garden (we're in the North Woods of Wisconsin) is still covered in snow and we're supposed to get another 8-14" tonight/tomorrow. Sigh. Here's to growing season of more than 90 days!!!
