I am growing a romaine variety called garnet rose that has me amazed. Talk about cut and come again, and again, and again. We have been cutting this variety for weeks, and it keeps coming back!! At this rate I may never plant a seed again. I'm not sure how many times it will come back, but I plan on finding out. :ep

Wow that is stunning lettuce! Really could pass as an ornamental

Hi Lesa, Happy New Year. How are you holding up in our deep freeze? We have snow I don't believe. If I never see another flake it will be fine with me. Yes, this romaine is becoming one of my favorites, as I have it a few times a week, but in this weather salads are not all that appealing. Soup is more appropriate. Also, I have red salad bowl coming along with dutch winter brown, chard and beet greens. We had beet greens this week and my wife said you would never find them this time of year, and, produce prices are peaking. We like the colored varieties as they are healthier.

Funny you should mention that. One Christmas I wrapped a pot in holiday paper and placed it on the table as a decoration for Christmas dinner. It looked fantastic. :ya

No doubt it would have. I'm stuck having to wait on the weather to cool down before planting any lettuce.

Hal, where in the world do you live? Most of us on
TEG are praying for an early spring and warmer weather. :fl

Romaine has been best for cut and come again, Jackb. That is outdoors where I usually don't use the c' n c' method, however, just taking the whole lettuce plant.

I had thought that Romaine worked better because it stood up to hot dry weather.

Your mention of beet greens made me think of "wilted lettuce." I guess one can treat the ingredients (other than the lettuce) as a salad dressing and pour over the lettuce. My experience was that the entire head of leaf lettuce went into the pan with the cooked bacon, tossed and then was served. It is the #1 way for me to cook beet greens.
