The shoots are edible, Dahlia? I suppose they are. I know squirrels will eat the growing tips of my rambling rose. Do you have cooking tips ;) or are they a salad ingredient?

i thought rose too for sure having grown them at a very early age and then for many years until i went away to college. i have never eaten the tender shoots or sprouts simply because we wanted the flowers always! i still won't eat them.

if you go through the fun of harvesting rose hips and getting seeds out of them you may have a fun surprise where the seeds have little bugs in them. luckily i had them in a sealed container so the bugs came out of the seeds but then didn't get any further. i was disappointed as i did want to try sprouting the seeds.

Hi Steve,
According to my foraging guide, shoots of this Nootka rose are good raw, but can also be steamed and eaten like asparagus, roasted, or stir fried!

Rosa rugosa has more rugose (dark green, wrinkled) foliage, which would seem to match that image. Rosa rugosa is endemic to Asia whereas Rosa nutkana is native to the west coast of North America. Location isn't everything as Rosa rugosa has been introduced to many coastal areas in the US and is quite invasive. Another feature that can be used ot distinguish them is fruit size (rugosa is larger), but these species hybridize too! I don't know if enough DNA sequence has been determined to place them on the rose family tree, but that might turn into a thorny discussion! :)

Guess this gorgeous flower! I used to have a light purple one too. They are surprisingly hardy!
