I visited the library today and spent most of my time there with my nose in a book composed mostly of photographs. The places shown were all within just a few hours drive from here.
The drive is called "The Selkirk Loop." The Selkirks are the mountains that run north from here. Older than the Rockies, they are so close, the range is probably considered by nearly everyone as a part of the Rockies.
I came home and my Twitter feed had a link to a New York Times article today. It was on "The Mullan Road." That was a military road built from Fort Walla Walla, in what is now Washington State, to Fort Benton, in Montana. This road was put in just as the US government was taking over the administration of the Oregon Territory.
I thought you might like to get a feel for the geography of this part of the world. The first link takes you to the page with a brief review of the Selkirk book. The website is by a nonprofit outfit set up by the commercial interests along that scenic drive, hoping to encourage tourism. There is quite a lot to the website and you can look around.

The second link is the NYTimes' article on the Mullan Road and the recent convention in Montana of the "Mullanites."
