I like this entire idea!
The UCSanDiego physicist author does look at the huge energy problem with modern agriculture and just barely suggests something about local food production: Here is the last paragraph of his blog post:
"For instance, if you eat locally grown vegetables that took one kcal of fossil fuel energy for each kcal of food energy, you could claim that the 7000 kcal gallon of food that lets you walk 75 miles only cost a quarter of a gallon of fossil fuels, so your journey effectively gets 300 MPG in fossil fuel terms. Now thats something to smile about!" MPG of a Human
