Kiwi Wow Are They Good

Thanks to @majorcatfish I have been waiting for a dozen kiwi to ripen. Website said to wait till ripe, they give with a light squeeze. Today at lunch time I ate 3 so much better then ones in supermarket. They where so good I didn't even mind peeling them, something I hate doing. Juicy, tart/sweet

@Nyboy glad you are enjoying them.. had to send them to you, hopefully next year they produce more for others to try. my favorite way eating them is to cut them into quarters and taking the knife just slide it between the skin and fruit....

shame that only come once a year.. well for here..

We eat the fuzzy brown ones from the grocery store by cutting in 1/2 and eating with a spoon. Much easier than peeling.

If you don't want to peel them and you don't mind grape sized fruit you don't have to peel, grow this one.

The female A. kolomika doesn't have the colorful foliage but she produces these pop in your mouth sweet fruits. The new leaves come out green with white, the white turns pink as it ages, the flowers although very small are quite fragrant. It took a few years for our female to start producing fruit but now each year it's loaded.

Annette I planted several male and female vines they where labeled Arctic. @catjac1975 had a vine that grew so much she needed a back hoe to dig up.

I've never had any trouble with this ornamental Actinidia, I've had it for over 20 years. It gets a light pruning in the spring, it's more shrubby than vining, not a rampant grower like some of the others.

Wow, Annette - you grow kiwi too??? Doesn't that take trellis space away from your beans?

At one point, I intended to grow hardy kiwi. I gathered a lot of info, even a publication devoted strictly to kiwi; but never followed through. A shame, because apparently the 'fad' died down, and there are far fewer sources - and fewer varieties - than there were then. Now I've got plenty of space, but at my age, I'm not sure I want to plant something that takes 6-7 years to begin fruiting.
