I don't understand how lifting the roots in the fall is such a big deal with people. Okay, I'm kinda tired in the fall but don't we cultivate our planting ground sometime during the 12 months?

I don't have much trouble getting the roots out, lifting them with a spading fork. Sometimes, they go back in the very same ground in the spring. That may not be the wisest thing to do but, they go somewhere in cultivated ground.

Posthole digger for me but a shovel will work fine. More work in the spring than fall but it might be quicker because I have to be more slow and careful getting roots out than making a hole to drop one root in.

Maybe it's my soil. Shove a couple of rocks outta the way and find a root in October. Plant a root in May.

@Nyboy , I imagine that your friends and clients like seeing your flowers, too!

for me late-summer and fall is a lot more busy than the mid-summer time. on top of the normal garden tasks the tomatoes, peppers and beans picking and processing starts in mid-to-late August, then once it cools off enough i can get going on any heavy projects. adding other things into that mix is not easy.

right now for the next few weeks is the lighter duty part of the season. weeding is easier with the plants being big enough to shade the ground and i only have to keep up with picking fresh beans when they start being ready.

Dahlias are such a bright spot in the October garden when other flowers have finished blooming. This one is called Mission Pixie, and it has the water lily form. Its colour is so subtle, yet strikingly beautiful. I especially like water lily dahlias because the blossom faces upwards; this is great if you are viewing them from above, and also helpful for filling the centre of cut flower bouquets.
